Honoring the Brave: Memorial Day in Our Community / Central Oregon Local Live!
Issue #132
Dear Readers;
As you may have noticed, I took a bit of a break from the Newsletter. I am back and looking forward to bringing you the latest of what is happening in Central Oregon!
I do have one announcement, I’ve secured a calendar software to showcase the events in Central Oregon, I think you may like the new way to see and access the information for the events. Although it won’t be in the email, you can see it in the website version and there is also an easy link to see the list of events as well. Eventually, I will enable submissions directly to the calendar, but for now it will be ‘yours truly’ and those hosting the events adding to the list. I will still be ‘Spotlighting’ events within the newsletter as well.
In addition, you may see some smaller changes going forward over the next few weeks. They are all for the good and to keep this ‘little’ newsletter going.
Thank you for your continued support.
Cheers!
Laura

From Snow to Sunshine: Mt. Bachelor Transitions to Summer Adventures
As the winter sports season draws to a close at Mt. Bachelor, the resort is gearing up for a vibrant summer with a host of outdoor activities. The final day of the winter season was May 26, marked by festivities including skiing, riding, ziplining, and live music alongside the annual Pond Skim event. Looking ahead, Mt. Bachelor opens its doors to summer adventures, offering everything from mountain biking and ziplining to guided whitewater rafting tours on the Deschutes River. Early-season rates and booking options are now available for these activities, ensuring an action-packed summer for all visitors.
Redmond Fire & Rescue to Close Outdoor Burning
May 24, 2024-REDMOND,OR- Effective June 1, 2024, Redmond Fire & Rescue will close all outdoor debris burning for the season, until further notice. During this closure, all outdoor debris burning is prohibited in all areas served by Redmond Fire & Rescue in Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson counties.
As a reminder, the closure of outdoor debris burning prohibits all of the following:
1. Backyard or open burning (branches, yard debris, etc.).
2. Agricultural burning (agricultural wastes, crops, field burning, ditches etc.).
3. Any other land clearing, slash, stump, waste, debris or controlled burning.
The burn ban does not prohibit:
1. Small outdoor cooking, warming or recreational fires at residential properties. These include portable or permanent fire pits, fire tables, and campfires, with a maximum fuel area of three feet in diameter and two feet in height in a safe location away from combustibles or vegetation and are fully extinguished after use.
2. Barbeque grills, smokers and similar cooking appliances with clean, dry firewood, briquettes, wood chips, pellets, propane, natural gas, or similar fuels.
There may be more restrictive fire safety rules on Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF)-protected land. ODF restrictions may include prohibitions on campfires, smoking, target shooting, powered equipment, motorized vehicles, and other public/private landowner and industrial fire restrictions. More details about ODF fire restrictions are available at Oregon Department of Forestry Public Fire Restrictions.
Outdoor fires in violation of this closure may be immediately extinguished. If a fire agency responds to a fire that has been started in willful violation of this closure, the person responsible may be liable for all costs incurred, as well as legal fees per ORS 478.965. Burning restrictions are authorized under Oregon Revised Statute 478.960, Oregon Fire Code 307 and Redmond Fire & Rescue Ordinance 5.
Fire Officials in Deschutes County encourage the public to use extreme caution with activities that could start a fire. It is everyone’s responsibility to prevent and be prepared for wildfires. Residents are encouraged to continue exercising caution and taking steps to prevent and prepare for the threat of wildfires. That includes:
Creating defensible space:
• Mowing and watering lawns.
• Removing brush, dry grass, and leaves from underneath decks and crawlspaces.
• De-limbing tree branches 10 feet off the ground and well away from your roof.
• Planting low-growing, fire-resistant plants near your home.
• Eliminating fuel sources near and around your home – firewood, fuel tanks, etc.
Maintaining access:
• The road or driveway to your home should be clear of all debris, dense vegetation, and low-hanging branches. Turn-out areas are needed if the road or driveway to your home is not large enough for two-way traffic or your home is located at the end of a long driveway or dead-end road.
• The driveway to your home should be designed without sharp curves or steep grades.
• If crossing a bridge is necessary to access your home, it should support 75,000 pounds.
Schools Pivot Following Failed Measures
By Mike Thomas KBND
BEND, PRINEVILLE, OR -- Voters on Tuesday rejected measures for Bend La Pine and Crook County Schools. In Prineville, School Board member Scott Cooper says with the defeat of a bond his district will need to find the money somewhere for building maintenance and repairs.
“I think that's a really good question to ask current leadership of the board because two of the board members came out halfway through the bond and said they no longer thought it was necessary. I don't know where they thought we were going to get the funding because we don't have another source of funding for this and these repairs cannot go undone. So, I'm looking forward to that conversation.” Cooper doesn’t see a lot of alternatives, “We’ll certainly have to go back to the drawing board and figure that out. There isn’t just $17-million laying around.”

Honoring the Brave: Memorial Day in Our Community
As May ushers in warmer days and vibrant blooms, our community prepares to observe Memorial Day, a solemn occasion to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives serving in the U.S. military. This year, Memorial Day falls on May 29th, providing us an opportunity to reflect on the courage and sacrifices of our nation's soldiers.
Memorial Day: A Day of Remembrance
Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day began after the Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers. Over the years, it evolved to honor all American military personnel who died in all wars. This national holiday not only calls us to remember the past but also to uphold the values for which they fought.
Local Observances and Ceremonies
Our community will host several events to mark this important day, ensuring that the true meaning of Memorial Day is not forgotten amid the long weekend's informal celebrations.
In Bend:
Deschutes Memorial Gardens Service - A ceremony will be held at 1:00 PM at the Central Oregon Veterans Memorial. This event will take place at the Deschutes Memorial Gardens on North Hwy 97 (Memorial Day Oregon | May 27, 2024).
In Redmond:
Terrebonne Pioneer Cemetery Ceremony - This event will take place from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM at the Terrebonne Pioneer Cemetery. It's a chance to honor local veterans, including notable Medal of Honor recipient Robert “Bob” Dale Maxwell (Memorial Day Oregon | May 27, 2024).
Redmond Memorial Cemetery Ceremony - A memorial service is scheduled from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Redmond Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The ceremony will include a flag folding demonstration by Redmond High School JROTC (Memorial Day Oregon | May 27, 2024).
These events offer community members a chance to reflect on the sacrifices made by military personnel and participate in national remembrance. Each event will likely include moments of reflection, the playing of Taps, and other commemorative activities typical of Memorial Day observances.

Unveiling the Matcha Miracle: Your New Weapon Against Gum Disease

Hey there, health-conscious readers! Have you ever thought that your favorite cup of matcha green tea could do more than just boost your energy levels? Well, it turns out that matcha might also be the key to promoting your oral health, especially when it comes to preventing and managing periodontal gum disease.
Recent studies highlighted on DrBicuspid.com have shown that the antioxidants present in green tea, such as catechins, play a significant role in reducing inflammation - a crucial factor in periodontal diseases. By interfering with the body's inflammatory response to periodontal bacteria, these antioxidants help in maintaining healthier gums and teeth.
But what makes matcha even more exciting is its potential in a mouthwash formulation. A study published in Microbiology Spectrum revealed that using a mouthwash containing matcha could effectively inhibit the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), a key bacterium involved in periodontitis. This finding opens up new possibilities for using matcha as a natural means to control inflammation associated with gum disease.
In laboratory tests, matcha extract demonstrated potent antibacterial activity against various oral pathogens, including P. gingivalis. Additionally, a trial involving individuals with gum disease showed that using the matcha mouthwash led to a significant reduction in periodontal disease-causing bacteria. These results emphasize the potential of matcha as a prophylactic and therapeutic option for periodontal diseases.
While the study showed promising results, further research is needed to explore the full benefits of matcha, such as testing its efficacy in different forms like direct injections into periodontal pockets. Large-scale clinical trials are recommended to confirm matcha's potential as a treatment option for gum diseases.
So, next time you sip on your soothing cup of matcha green tea, remember that you're not just enjoying a delicious beverage - you might also be taking a step towards better oral health! For more detailed information on this groundbreaking research, check out the full article on DrBicuspid.com here.

Confession time! I’ve been struggling with a bit of gingivitis that I can’t seem to get under control. I for one am going to be looking to drinking my matcha product I already have but haven’t been utilizing - Trim Science Matcha more regularly, it has some weight loss compounds as well so win! I also think I’m going to look at getting matcha powder and making my own mouth rinse. I’ve done a bit of research and found two promising products on Amazon, see below. I’ve included the Trim Science link as well if you’re interested in what it is all about.
