Fire North of Bend breaks out late Tuesday night

A large shop near Highway 97 north of Bend caught fire late Tuesday night, spreading to trailers, RVs, and brush before firefighters could contain it. Bend Fire and Rescue responded, but the lack of fire hydrants required assistance from neighboring fire departments. The cause of the fire is under investigation, with extensive damage making the process lengthy. The building and its contents are a total loss.

Tragic Collision Claims Life of Metolius Resident in Highway 361 Accident

METOLIUS, OREGON - In a devastating incident that unfolded on Monday morning, a Metolius woman lost her life in a harrowing two-car crash on Highway 361, as confirmed by the Oregon State Police.

The accident occurred just north of Metolius at approximately 10:34 a.m., prompting a swift response from troopers and emergency personnel. According to the preliminary investigation, a southbound Chevy Tahoe, operated by 36-year-old Sergio Sanchez of Madras, veered into the northbound lane, resulting in a catastrophic head-on collision with a Ram 3500 truck. The Ram truck was driven by 60-year-old John Wallace, a resident of Metolius.

Both drivers were rushed to the hospital to receive medical attention for their injuries. Tragically, the passenger in the Ram Truck, 56-year-old Anna Wallace, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The collision led to the closure of Highway 361 for approximately five hours, allowing investigators to meticulously reconstruct the incident. The Oregon State Police have classified the crash as a criminal matter, indicating that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Speed Limits Reduced on Culver Highway Near Madras Following Comprehensive Safety Study

In response to recent findings from a comprehensive safety study, the city of Madras has obtained approval from the Oregon authorities to lower speed limits on specific stretches of the Culver Highway. The adjustments aim to enhance road safety for both residents and commuters.

Effective immediately, the speed limit on the north end of Highway 361 will be reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph, starting just south of H Street. Additionally, drivers approaching the fairgrounds will now have a lowered speed limit of 40 mph, down from the previous 45 mph.

The decision to decrease the speed limits was made after a meticulous analysis of crash data in the respective areas. This proactive approach is part of the city's ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens and promoting responsible driving habits.

Local authorities urge all motorists to adhere to the revised speed limits and exercise caution while traveling through these areas. The implementation of these changes reflects Madras' dedication to fostering a secure and efficient transportation network for everyone.
