Administrators and Teachers in Redmond School District Raise Concerns About Students' Social Media Usage

Parents, educators, and school officials met at Redmond High School to discuss the impact of social media on students. The school district has joined a class action lawsuit against social media companies, citing disruptions caused by social media in schools. The district was already concerned about social media's impact on students, with a significant number of disciplinary issues arising from social media interactions outside of school, leading to conflicts during the school day. Holly Brown, the district's public information officer, interviewed students and teachers to understand the situation better. High school students feel trapped in social media but are making conscious efforts to reduce their usage. Some students start using social media as early as third grade. High schoolers are more open to discussing social media with their parents, while middle schoolers fear parental reactions. Disciplinary issues in schools are often linked to social media interactions, accounting for over 60% of such issues at Ridgeview High School, according to Principal Brian Cook.

On Wednesday, Nov. 8, the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners will recognize retired Army Lieutenant Colonel and Vietnam War veteran Dick Tobiason for his service and unwavering support for veterans in Central Oregon.

“As we approach Veterans’ Day, we are excited to honor and recognize Dick for his many extraordinary contributions to our Country and our County,” said Commissioner Patti Adair. “We are truly grateful for his service.”

“Dick is a tireless champion for local veterans,” said Commissioner Phil Chang. “He has changed the lives of many through his work.”

Deschutes County Veterans’ Services staff will also share information about the services they provide and resources that are available for local veterans.

The Board of Commissioners presentation will occur at 9 a.m. at the Deschutes Services Building, which is located at 1300 NW Wall Street.

Near Eagle Crest garage Fire destroys duplex and parked SUV.

A fire destroyed a duplex townhome near Eagle Crest Resort, originating in the garage and spreading to two parked vehicles. No injuries were reported, and the renters escaped safely after noticing smoke. Firefighters responded and contained the flames, limiting damage to the neighboring townhome. Losses estimated at $750,000. The exact cause of fire was under investigation, Brown said, but investigators at this point believe it started at the ceiling level in the garage.

Assistance was provided at the scene by the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office, Central Electric Cooperative and the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. The American Red Cross also was called in to provide any needed assistance to the fire victims

This week’s Local Cause Spotlight is Cascade Canine Rescue East and West.

CCREW has been in the Central Oregon area working hard to find homes for pets in need for several years. I have personally adopted from them and couldn’t have been happier with the process and the care they take with their animals that are in their charge.

If you are looking for a pet, please take a look at their available pets and follow them on Facebook as they update there regularly.

Who We Are

Cascade Canine Rescue East and West or CCREW, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit group in the Tumalo area of Bend, OR. It is run by passionate volunteers who work endlessly to safely vaccinate, care for, spay/neuter, microchip, and find loving forever homes for dogs and cats.

Our Mission

In short, to address the pet overpopulation problem through spay/neuter, and education.

Cascade Canine Rescue East and West or CCREW, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit group in the Tumalo area of Bend, OR. It is run by passionate volunteers who work endlessly to save, vaccinate, care for, spay/neuter, microchip, and network to find loving forever homes for dogs and puppies. We rely heavily on other Pacific Northwest rescue partners, local dog advocates, low-cost vets and business support, fosters, and others to help us with our mission. We are truly grateful for the assistance.

CCREW provides local assistance if there’s a need and we are able to provide accommodations. We aid in connecting folks with other community resources involved with animal welfare as well.

CCREW advocates for bully breeds, but is not breed specific. We save all different breeds and ages of dogs if we think we have a good chance of finding them loving homes in Oregon.

The majority of our furry friends are saved from overcrowded high kill shelters and other urgent situations in CA. These animals have often been neglected or dumped, and have little to no chance of survival without CCREW and our passionate partners. It truly takes a village to make a dent in the terrible overpopulation epidemic in this country.

  • Paper Towels

  • Disposable potty pads

  • Washable potty pads

  • Durable toys

  • Diamond small and larger breed dog food.
