Issue #009

๐Ÿ’–I would like to dedicate this Issue to John S Agan, my father who passed away on this date Nov. 13th 2022. He loved creating newsletters for extended family happenings and for all the different organizations that he volunteered at over the years - and there were quite a few. He inspired and instilled in me a desire to create newsletters (which I have on a smaller scale) and I would not have even considered creating this special newsletter if it were not for that. Thank you dad, I like to think you would have enjoyed the C.O. Local Buzz. ๐Ÿ’–

22nd Annual Veterans Day Parade in Bend Draws Crowds to Express Gratitude and Honor for Those Who Served Our Country

Bend, OR - The 22nd annual Bend Veterans Day Parade honored American veterans, featuring J.W. Terry as the grand marshal, a local Vietnam veteran. Thousands lined the streets, waving flags and saluting. The parade, organized by Central Oregon Veterans Outreach, involved over 400 volunteers and 2,000 participants. The theme was "Thank You for Your Service: Veterans Serve Their Country and Their Community." Terry, with 32 years of service, reflected on emotions and the importance of recognizing active-duty personnel. The event celebrated veterans' contributions beyond the military. Terry, nominated by veterans' groups, exemplifies ongoing service, and sponsors included Gary Gruner Chevrolet Buick GMC and Mid Oregon Credit Union.

Related: Veterans were also celebrated in โ€˜Flag City USAโ€™ Redmond with their very own parade.

The Redmond streets were lined with hundreds of flags and people honoring veterans.A Vietnam veteran told Central Oregon Daily what it meant to him.โ€œBeing from Salem theyโ€™re pretty patriotic there too, but nothing like this. This is great, the first time I saw those flags it was humbling. I thought gosh, Iโ€™m in the right place,โ€ said Owen Herzberg, a Vietnam Veteran.

Two F-15 Eagle fighter jets flew overhead 1,000 feet of elevation at 400 mph. making it a grand finale to Redmondโ€™s annual parade.

South Fork Boise River

Fishing in Central Oregon during late fall is viable despite the cooler weather.

Anglers can target trout in the Crooked River, particularly below Bowman Dam, where whitefish spawn, attracting redband trout. Fly fishing with egg patterns is effective.

The Metolius River, known for wild rainbows and bull trout, allows catch-and-release fly-fishing with barbless hooks.

The Deschutes River section below Benham Falls offers productive fly-fishing for rainbow and brown trout during fall. Nymphing is effective, but dry-fly fishing is an option on overcast days.

Wait WHAT? Samson Skyโ€™s Flying Car leaves ground for first time.

The Switchblade, a flying sports car designed and tested in Redmond and Prineville, successfully completed its maiden flight at Moses Lake Airport, Washington, the flight lasted 6 minutes. After 14 years of design and testing, the CEO sees this as a significant milestone toward meeting the high demand for the vehicle, with over 2,300 reservations from 57 countries. The Switchblade can drive up to 125 mph, fly at a max speed of 190 mph, and uses unleaded auto gas. Owners can transform it from a street-legal car to a flying mode in under three minutes, requiring a private pilotโ€™s license. Priced at around $170,000, the purchase includes a program where owners assemble their vehicle in Central Oregon with no special skills required.

College Football Wrap Up

No. 6 Oregon held off a late USC rally for a 36-27 victory on Saturday night, effectively eliminating the Trojans from contention for the Pac-12 championship game

With just one loss, Oregon sits just below the undefeated Huskies in the conference standings with two games left โ€” next week at Arizona State and back home over Thanksgiving weekend against rival Oregon State.

The Beavers (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12, No. 12 CFP) kept their Pac-12 championship game hopes intact and extended their home winning streak to nine games beating Stanford 62 - 17
