The staff is ready, the skiers are ready, the snowboarders are ready… Everybody is ready for opening day of the Mountain, but is Bachelor going to be ready?

Word is because of the weather system over the weekend is, if they get enough snow (at least 15 inches) they should be able to open. Stay tuned.

The latest is they only received about 4 inches of snow, and unless y’all start doing the snow dance, opening by the 24th may not happen. Check their facebook page as well at their website for any updates.

Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office seeks public help in finding missing Bend-area woman

Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said Tuesday they are seeking the public’s help in finding a woman last seen around June of this year who was living off the east side of Highway 97 near milepost 132, just north of Bend.

The sheriff’s office recently received a report regarding Kasie Marie Mae Jones, 31, and is asking for the public’s assistance in finding and checking on her welfare, Detective Bryan Morris said.

Jones was described as a white female, 5-foot-1, weighing about 130 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. A 2018 photo of Jones was released by the sheriff’s office.

Anyone with information or who may have seen Jones was asked to call non-emergency dispatch at 541-693-6911 and ask for Detective Morris.

Sisters Bakery Opens New Facility to Meet Demand

Sisters Bakery, a popular Central Oregon bakery operating since 1981, has opened a new offsite bread production facility to meet increasing demand, especially from its growing wholesale clients. This expansion, which has been a long time coming according to owner Spencer Hamiga, will allow Sisters Bakery to boost production capacity and continue serving both retail and wholesale customers.

Recent social media posts shared news of the facility and generated an enthusiastic response - over 100,000 views, 400+ shares, and 1,000 new followers. This highlights the community excitement around Sisters Bakery's growth.

The expansion enables Sisters Bakery to meet rising regional demand for its goods and presents opportunities to extend its presence across Central Oregon.

Wild Turkeys Thriving in Oregon After 1961 Introduction

The wild turkey is not originally from Oregon, but the species has flourished here since being introduced in 1961 by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW). ODFW released wild turkeys, specifically the Rio Grande and Merriam's subspecies, in the pine forests surrounding the Metolius Basin.

Since then, the Rio Grande turkey has seen particularly successful expansion across the state. The Merriam's turkey also maintains a steady population. Females lay 10-14 eggs that hatch after 28 days, with poults leaving the nest within 24 hours.

Turkeys forage on insects, berries, seeds and nuts. They can fly for short distances up to a quarter mile and roost in trees at night. Their name stems from a misunderstanding - British colonists received these birds from Turkish or Spanish trade ships and therefore dubbed them "turkeys."

Ben Franklin was an early admirer of wild turkeys, preferring them over the bald eagle as America's national bird. Today, wild turkeys thrive in Oregon, a testament to the success of their introduction over 60 years ago. Groups of turkeys are called "doles," "crops," "gangs," "raffles" or "posses."

Judge Rules Oregon Voter-approved Measure 114 violates the State Constitution

A voter-approved Oregon gun control law violates the state constitution, a judge ruled Tuesday, continuing to block it from taking effect and casting fresh doubt over the future of the embattled measure.

The law, touted as one of the strictest in the nation, faced challenges from its inception after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year altered the framework for evaluating Second Amendment cases. The recent decision came from Circuit Court Judge Robert S. Raschio in rural southeast Oregon, maintaining the law's blockage.

This legislation mandates criminal background checks and firearm training for permit acquisition, while also prohibiting high-capacity magazines. Since its narrow approval by voters in November, Measure 114 faced relentless legal opposition at both state and federal levels.

A lawsuit filed by gun owners argued that the law infringed upon Oregonians' right to bear arms as protected by the state constitution. State officials, including Democratic Governor Tina Kotek and Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum, are defendants in the case and plan to appeal the ruling.

Legal experts anticipate a prolonged legal battle, as the case may proceed to the Oregon Court of Appeals and potentially to the state's highest court. This ruling follows conflicting decisions in state and federal courts, adding to the confusion regarding the law's enforceability.

During the trials, arguments centered on whether the law hindered Second Amendment rights and its effectiveness in curbing mass shootings. Judge Raschio disputed claims that banning high-capacity magazines would significantly reduce the severity of mass shootings, citing their infrequency.

The legal debate is intensified by a U.S. Supreme Court directive that altered the assessment criteria for gun laws, leading to ambiguity over which regulations can withstand legal challenges. This directive prompted conflicting interpretations in various court rulings across the country.

As legal battles persist, the future of the Oregon gun control law remains uncertain, reflecting a broader national struggle to balance gun regulation with constitutional rights.

Redmond Oregon trucking company hands out free Thanksgiving meals

Thanksgiving is a time of year when many give back to their communities.

In Redmond, Oregon, the Rizk Transportation Company did just that recently, handing out 100 free holiday meals to less fortunate residents on Nov. 17.

This marked the first year Rizk has held such an event, but owner Mike Rizk told Central Oregon Daily that he has been doing this independently for three years and has no plans of stopping.

During the event, Rizk workers carried out boxes, which were filled to the brim with all the fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving feast, to dozens of vehicles lined up outside.

There, residents like Clinton Keller were waiting.

Keller told Central Oregon Daily that the gesture meant the world to him.

“I get food stamps to live off of for my dinners and stuff,” he said. “With my kids, it kind of goes pretty fast so this will help bridge the gap.”

“I’m financially in a burden. I do have a roof over my head and I’m thankful. I am so thankful that they were giving out turkeys and food for the holidays that I normally at this point in my life would not be able to get,” Karen Humphrys told Central Oregon Daily.

Mason Engstrom, Rizk’s fleet services manager, said giving back means a lot.

“We’ve grown a lot in this past year so we decided why not give back, you know? No reason anyone should go hungry especially on Thanksgiving,” Engstrom said.
