Bend Park & Recreation District providing tuition assistance to their Kids Inc. college workers
College students can receive tuition assistance, in addition to their hourly pay, while working for Bend Park and Recreation District's Kids Inc. after-school program, a major draw for young workers at a time of widespread staffing challenges.
According to Bend Parks and Recreation District's website, "Kids INC is an afterschool recreation and enrichment program designed for children to have choices and new experiences. Activities include group games, exciting STEM projects and clubs. Fourth and fifth-graders will have their own programs with an age-appropriate curriculum."
Students employees are eligible for up to $5,250 in assistance per year, which is $1,750 quarter. They need to be in good academic standing and take at least nine credits per term.
Future Oregon law students won’t need to pass bar exam to become lawyers, can pursue apprenticeship option
Starting next May, The Oregon State Bar will be moving away from traditional standardized testing, meaning law students won’t be required to pass the bar exam in order to start practicing law.
Instead, students will have the option to partake in the Supervised Practice Portfolio Examination. This framework allows law students to participate in a post-graduation apprenticeship before submitting a work portfolio to the Oregon State Board of Bar Examiners.
The other option is the Oregon Experiential Portfolio Pathway, which would allow students at three law schools statewide to undergo a “rigorous experiential curriculum” during their second or third year of school, before submitting a work portfolio to the bar examiners.
This alternative, though, hasn’t been submitted to officials just yet. The only two other states that don’t require the bar exam for potential lawyers is Wisconsin and New Hampshire.
23,000-square-foot pickleball club to open in Redmond
Get ready for an exciting launch as a brand-new sports center, covering 23,000 square feet with nine courts, is all set to open its doors in Redmond next week.
The Premier Pickleball Club, located at 2405 SW 1st St. near the Redmond Airport, is the brainchild of local residents Mack and Jamie Carlson, deeply ingrained in the Redmond pickleball community. They've been part of the dedicated group frequenting the courts at Sam Johnson Park for years.
According to Jamie Carlson, the players in Redmond are incredibly dedicated, willing even to shovel snow off the courts to ensure they can play. Recognizing this passion, the Carlsons envisioned a business opportunity to provide these committed players with an indoor facility, enabling year-round play regardless of the weather.
The Premier Pickleball Club won't just be about nine courts available for reservations, accommodating numerous players simultaneously. It's designed to offer an enhanced experience, featuring bleachers for spectators to watch significant matches, alongside amenities such as spaces for relaxation, showers, equipment purchases, food, and beverages.
Mack Carlson emphasized the distinction, noting that unlike public courts where players quickly finish up to make space for others, their club will foster an environment where individuals can socialize and have a good time both on and off the courts. Part of the space will resemble a sports bar, complete with tables, chairs, large TVs, and areas for relaxation.
With plans to initially employ seven staff members and operating hours spanning from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week, the club also offers members the chance to access the courts 24/7 using a dedicated code.
Their team includes David Kempster, slated to be the club's professional instructor. Kempster brings experience as a touring and club pro from Delaware and will conduct classes and provide guidance to club members.
The response to membership has been positive, with approximately half of the slots filled during a pre-opening sale. Following a grand opening scheduled for next month, the club plans to introduce monthly memberships and hourly rates to cater to a broader player base.
Jamie Carlson highlighted the inclusive nature of the club, with certified instructors teaching classes for all skill levels. They aim to host tournaments, a club championship, and potentially feature on a professional tour. Additionally, the facility will be available for private parties and events.
A soft opening is slated for Nov. 25, with the Carlsons optimistic about reaching full operational capacity for a grand New Year's Day celebration. Membership fees range from an annual adult membership at $1,299 to family memberships at $3,000 per year, along with options for monthly memberships and pay-per-play rates for the public.
Mack Carlson mentioned that for members utilizing the facility extensively, the cost per hour averages between $3 to $6. Looking ahead, they envision a patio in operation by spring, offering food, beverages, and another space for pickleball enthusiasts to socialize.
In Mack Carlson's words, the club will be a welcoming hub for people of all ages and skill levels, fostering an inclusive community where everyone gets a chance to play and enjoy their time on the courts.
