Mt. Bachelor closes due to flooding, ‘Atmospheric river’ turns heavy snow to rain in Cascades; standing water

An “atmospheric river” of warmer, wetter air turned the heavy snow to heavy rain in the Cascades Sunday morning, including Mt. Bachelor, where standing water and flooding prompted its closure for the day, just one day after the resort's opening day

“Snow turned to rain earlier and heavier than expected, and is forecasted to continue all day,” the resort’s Sunday morning update said.

“For the safety of our employees and guests, we are suspending operations today, 12/3, due to heavy rain, flooding, standing water concerns, dangerous road conditions and to preserve our snowpack,” the report continued.

“Heavy rain during early season can be very detrimental to our snowpack - our team will be working to control the impact throughout the next 24+ hours,” Mt. Bachelor said. “Continued rain is in the forecast tomorrow, we will assess conditions and adjust operations as needed tomorrow morning."

The National Weather Service in Pendleton advised, “An atmospheric river event has begun across the area and will continue through Wednesday. It will bring abundant moisture and rising temperatures to the region.”

“High temperatures by Tuesday will be 10 to 20 degrees above normal,” forecasters said. “These temperatures will cause rising snow levels through early Wednesday before snow levels decrease again.”

About 1-2 inches of rain is expected in the mountains through Monday night, with some higher amounts in the Washington Cascades. Another 1-1.5 inches, with local amounts up to 2 inches, is expected Tuesday and Wednesday. “Significant rises are expected om many area rivers and streams, though no mainstem river flooding is anticipated at this time,” the NWS said. Only the Naches River is expected to reach or exceed “action stage” by midweek, but if more rain falls, “additional rivers could reach bank-full.”

Arrest Made in Bend as Police Catch Man Trying to Meet Minor at Skate Park with Alcohol, Condoms, and Drugs

In a recent operation conducted by the Bend Police Department, a 26-year-old man was apprehended for attempting to solicit a minor for sexual activities. The individual, identified as Hunter James Nash, engaged in conversations with an officer posing as a 16-year-old girl on a social media platform.

The investigation began when authorities initiated efforts to identify adults seeking to lure minors online. Nash, believing he was communicating with a teenage girl, reportedly exchanged explicit photos and offered illegal substances, including psilocybin mushrooms, with intentions to share them during their supposed meeting. Moreover, he allegedly planned to provide alcohol and condoms for the encounter.

The planned meeting was arranged to take place at Ponderosa Skate Park on SE Wilson Avenue. Upon Nash's arrival at the designated location, law enforcement officers promptly arrested him. Subsequent searches conducted by the police revealed condoms and a 12-pack of White Claw Hard Seltzer in Nash's vehicle, along with approximately 28 grams of psilocybin mushrooms found at his residence.

Following his arrest, Nash was taken into custody and held at the Deschutes County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including attempted furnishing of alcohol to a minor, possession and attempted delivery of controlled substances to a minor, luring a minor for sexual conduct, online sexual corruption of a child, attempted sex abuse, and endangerment of a minor's welfare.

Court records indicate that Nash appeared before a judge, who set bail at $30,000. Release conditions were imposed, including wearing a GPS bracelet, no contact with minors, and abstaining from alcohol or controlled substances, as well as avoiding establishments serving alcohol. Nash remains detained and is scheduled for arraignment on an anticipated formal indictment on December 6.

This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat online predators targeting minors, emphasizing the necessity for vigilance and proactive measures to ensure the safety of young individuals in the digital realm.

Portland State University Student's Food Cart Journey Culminates in Successful Brick-and-Mortar Eatery at Bend Municipal Airport

Hoss Talebi, a former student at Portland State University, turned his wish for quick and affordable campus food into reality by founding Dogs and Fries in 2013. Recently, Talebi expanded his venture by launching the restaurant's inaugural brick-and-mortar location at Bend Municipal Airport, taking over the 2,200 square-foot space previously occupied by CJ’s at the Airport.

The eatery offers a diverse menu featuring 17 types of hot dogs, including a vegan option, along with burgers, fries, salads, and a breakfast selection named "breakfast miracles." From the classic New York Dog priced at $6 to the loaded Bandari at $10, garnished with an array of toppings like grilled onions, tomato, diced fries, jalapeno, and pickles on a pub bun, the menu caters to varied tastes.

Dogs and Fries offers quintessential American fare while infusing a twist with unique ingredients like horseradish, blue cheese, hummus, and pineapple, albeit not all on a single hot dog. The ambiance exudes comfort with soft buns and a view of passing planes from mustard and ketchup-colored chairs.

A highlight of the menu is the stuffed hashbrowns priced at $7, layered with scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, grilled onions, sour cream, chipotle mayonnaise, and thinly sliced potatoes, adding a flavorful touch.

Listening closely to customer feedback has been pivotal for Talebi, who incorporated scratch-made toppings, gluten-free, and vegan options into the menu after serving the university community for seven years. He recalled busy mornings with lines of 15 to 20 people eagerly awaiting breakfast offerings.

In the 2 months since its inception, Dogs and Fries has garnered a loyal customer base at the Bend Municipal Airport's Building No. 3 location. Talebi, an immigrant from Persia who settled in Oregon in 1998 and relocated to Bend during the pandemic with his Bend-native wife, shifted from real estate to focus entirely on his hot dog business.

Talebi himself takes orders and serves customers, showcasing his dedication and hard work. A friend, Lawnae Hunter, commended Talebi's intelligence and work ethic, celebrating his success story as an immigrant thriving in the United States.

The venture stands as a testament to Talebi's entrepreneurial spirit and commitment, transforming a campus food cart dream into a thriving brick-and-mortar reality, resonating with locals and travelers alike.
