New Parkinson’s Program Utilizes Pickleball to Enhance Patients’ Well-Being
A pioneering eight-week course aimed at Parkinson’s patients mastering the game of pickleball concluded on Monday, marking a novel venture by Destination Rehab, a Central Oregon nonprofit specializing in assisting individuals with neurological conditions.
The initiative, dubbed "Pickleball for Parkinson's," sought to harness the sport's dynamic movement requirements to aid individuals with Parkinson's in enhancing mobility, confidence, and introducing an enjoyable activity conducive to shared experiences with friends and family.
Carol-Ann Nelson, the founder of Destination Rehab, highlighted the significance of the program, stating, “Pickleball requires so much movement and stepping and reaching that we thought it was a perfect pairing to try and work with people with Parkinson's to get them moving better.”
Collaborating with OSU-Cascades and four physical therapy doctoral candidates, Destination Rehab is conducting extensive research into the impact of the pickleball wellness regimen on the quality of life and balance of Parkinson's patients.
The participating OSU-Cascade students, led by Michelle Peterschimdt, expressed their enthusiasm for the program's success and the budding connections among the participants. Peterschimdt commented, “It's been really cool to see them come together as a community. There are seven participants in our group, and it's just been really fun to see them get to know each other.”
Among the participants, Paul Taylor, diagnosed with Parkinson's earlier this year, seized the opportunity to engage in the program after learning about its potential benefits. Taylor emphasized the value of being in an environment where individuals share similar experiences, stating, “I appreciate the opportunity to meet other people who are dealing with Parkinson's, because it's different for everyone.”
Taylor emphasized the educational aspect of interacting with peers and therapists, providing insights into managing the condition: “Maybe some of the things that you didn't even know were affecting you are affecting you, and you don't know that unless you hear other people talk about it.”
The program's sessions were generously supported by the Pickleball Zone, ensuring accessibility for participants. With the success of the initial course, a subsequent eight-week, two-hour program is slated to commence next month, indicating a promising continuation of this innovative initiative in the realm of Parkinson's therapy.

Homeless Dilemma Unfolds in Sisters, City's Rejecting Winter Shelter Raises Concerns
In Sisters, a community acclaimed for its events, a hidden crisis persists. Homelessness affects employed locals like Hanna and Jeremy, who live in the woods despite working in the city's businesses. Efforts to establish a winter shelter faced rejection twice by city authorities, leaving homeless aid initiatives in limbo.
Sisters' picturesque reputation contrasts with the reality faced by its homeless population seeking immediate support. While the city focuses on long-term solutions like affordable housing, the pressing needs of those without shelter remain unmet.
After nearly 10 months of construction initially slated to last about five, the intersection at Neff Road and Purcell Blvd. in northeast Bend is set to open Monday at noon.
The City of Bend made the announcement Thursday.
The intersection has been closed since February to make improvements. Those include the addition of separate left-turn lanes, new southbound and westbound right turn lanes, wider shared-use paths, street lighting, accessible curb ramps and sidewalk improvements.
The project was initially supposed to wrap up last summer, but it was delayed after the City said workers found old, unmapped infrastructure remnants, gas, communication and power lines for example, deep under the road.
The re-opening of the intersection will improve access to St. Charles Medical Center and Pilot Butte Middle School.
The City is asking people to drive carefully after the road re-opens because the contractor is finishing sidewalks, landscaping and more. Expect intermittent lane shifts with flaggers.
“In addition to the intersection, the project includes completing a modernized Purcell Boulevard from Full Moon Drive to Courtney Drive, including widening the roadway, building sidewalks, and also adding bike lanes on Purcell Boulevard between Butler Market Road and Robinson Street. The Purcell extension is anticipated to open late December, connecting Purcell between Neff and Butler Market,” the City said in a statement. “Travelers accustomed to using Daggett Lane for cross-town travel will be able to instead use Purcell, a collector street designed for higher traffic volumes. Please drive slowly and stay alert: this new section of Purcell is a residential collector road with a 25 mph speed limit.”
Updated info Head-On collision in Redmond Wed. Afternoon, One Fatality confirmed
A Redmond woman was driving in the oncoming lane on SW Canal Boulevard when her car collided head-on with a pickup truck and she was killed late Wednesday afternoon, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said Thursday.
County 911 dispatchers received several calls around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday reporting the crash on Canal Boulevard near milepost 5, south of Helmholtz Way, Sergeant Jason Wall said. Those on scene said a woman who was driving a Ford Fusion was non-responsive.
A short time later, an off-duty firefighter arrived on scene and tried to render aid to the woman, Wall said. But Redmond Fire paramedics soon arrived and confirmed the 30-year-old woman had died.
Investigators determined the woman, whose name was not released, was heading north on Canal Boulevard when her car collided head-on with a southbound Chevy Silverado driven by a 42-year-old Bend man. Witness statements helped them determine the car was traveling in the wrong lane, "for unknown reasons," Wall said.
The pickup driver, who was unhurt in the crash, told investigators he was unable to avoid the collision. Wall said he cooperated fully with the investigation and that no wrongdoing on his part was found, so he was not charged.
The crash and investigation closed Canal Boulevard between Helmholtz Way and SW 61 st Street for over two hours.
