Jury Convicts Randall Kilby in Hatchet Murders of Roommates, Faces Life Sentence

Randall Kilby

Randall Kilby was found guilty by a jury for the first- and second-degree murders of his two roommates, Jeffrey Taylor and Benjamin Taylor, in a hatchet attack at their Bend residence. Kilby admitted to the police that he struck the victims, claiming they mistreated his mother, although family members disputed this in court. The prosecution argued intent, while the defense highlighted differences in the killings and alleged gaps in evidence. Kilby also awaits trial for another murder charge related to Daphne Banks' death, found unconscious in the same home's garage in 2020.

Celebrity Chef Brian Malarkey to Launch Hawkeye & Huckleberry Lounge in Bend

Brian Malarkey on the left

Famed chef Brian Malarkey, known for his TV appearances, is gearing up to open a new steakhouse, Hawkeye & Huckleberry Lounge, on the site of the old Walt Reilly’s in west Bend. Expected to debut in early 2024, the restaurant will blend traditional steaks with a modern cowboy twist. Malarkey, who hails from Central Oregon, aims to pay homage to his roots with a menu featuring exotic dishes like venison, elk, and locally caught salmon. The venue's design will embrace an outdoor-themed aesthetic, offering a lively bar, communal dining, and even canvas tents for private bookings. This venture seeks to create a communal hub for Bend residents and visitors alike, celebrating Oregon's flavors and fostering a welcoming atmosphere for all.

Oregon State Police Investigate Surge in Poaching Incidents Across the State

Oregon State Police fish and wildlife troopers are currently probing nearly a dozen incidents of poaching reported within the last two months. The incidents involve the illegal killings of a bighorn sheep, two black bear cubs, seven elk, and two black-tailed buck deer, all abandoned to waste.

Yvonne Shaw, a representative from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), highlighted the concerning trend, stating, "Oregon has a poaching problem." Shaw acknowledged the increase in reports during this period due to hunters venturing into normally inaccessible areas. However, she emphasized that hunters are not typically responsible for these acts, often being instrumental in reporting such incidents as they have a vested interest in conservation.

Despite having 128 troopers statewide focused on these cases, Shaw emphasized the vastness of the landscape, relying on public vigilance. ODFW previously collaborated with OSP on a campaign to educate the public about poaching and its detrimental effects. Shaw expressed optimism that the recent rise in cases might stem from increased awareness.

The public is encouraged to report suspected poaching incidents through various channels: calling OSP (677) from mobile phones, dialing 800-452-7888 from landlines, emailing [email protected], or submitting reports via ProtectOregonsWildlife.com. Shaw stressed the importance of tips from the public, assuring anonymity for those reporting. Additionally, individuals whose tips result in citations or arrests may qualify for cash rewards or hunter preference points.

The joint efforts between agencies and public participation are crucial in combating and preventing poaching in Oregon's wildlife areas.

FBI Investigates Widespread Bomb Threats Targeting Oregon School Districts

Multiple Oregon school districts, including Crook County, received bomb threats via email, causing evacuations and some school closures. The FBI reported over 18 incidents across schools, synagogues, regional airports, and an airline. Special Agent Kieran Ramsey highlighted the strain on law enforcement, urging the public to report any suspicious activity. Investigators are tracing the origin of threats, noting similarities and an IP address outside the U.S. Similar incidents were reported in Ohio and Texas, indicating a nationwide trend. Perpetrators could face federal charges of up to five years in prison. Reporting threats is urged via Safe Oregon tipline or to local law enforcement.
