What’s a happening?

The Oregon State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on Highway 97 near Redmond.

On Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023, shortly after midnight, Oregon State Police troopers responded to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on Highway 97 at NW Maple Avenue near Redmond.

The preliminary investigation indicated that Deschutes County 9-1-1 received a call of a person sitting in the median of an unlighted portion of Highway 97 near the NE Maple Avenue overpass at approximately 12:19 a.m.

A short time later, Corey Lee Smith, 52, of Warm Springs was in the right northbound lane of Highway 97 when he was struck by a Ford F-150 operated by Brandon Wayne Boland, 48, of Redmond.

Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Ford and a passenger were uninjured.

The northbound lanes of Highway 97 were closed for approximately three hours.

OSP was assisted by the Redmond Police Department, Redmond Fire Department, and Oregon Department of Transportation.

Redmond Fire & Rescue Responds to Early Morning Structure Fire

December 19, 2023-REDMOND, OR- At approximately 1am in the morning, Redmond fire & Rescue was alerted to a possible structure fire at 4115 NW Xavier Avenue.

First arriving units on scene were met by the occupants of the residence who advised that there was smoke coming from the crawl space. After an initial investigation fire crews observed light smoke coming from the foundation vents of the residence and determined there was a working fire within the crawlspace. Firefighters had to cut multiple holes in the floor of the residence to locate and extinguish the fire. There were no reported injuries, and no animals were harmed.

Fire investigators were on scene conducting interviews and investigating the cause of the fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical wiring failure within the crawlspace.

Estimated fire loss is $85,000.

City of Bend Puts Valuable Real Estate Assets Up for Sale to Fuel Economic Growth

The city of Bend is preparing to sell city-owned properties, which is a relatively uncommon occurrence due to their usual civic use. The properties set to be sold include 3.4 acres near SE 9th and Glenwood, initially designated for housing several years ago but now open to various housing options, including market-rate housing. The city is actively seeking proposals to bring housing to this central area of Bend.

On the north end of town, there are two parcels in Juniper Ridge totaling about 200 acres that are available for sale. These parcels are zoned for industrial use, and the city hopes to attract buyers who will have plans for development or subdivision, aiming for swift construction commencement. The city expects the developers to take responsibility for building necessary infrastructure in exchange for the land sale.

The motivation behind these sales is to address the growing demand for industrial space in Bend, given the low vacancy rate in the existing industrial properties. The city aims to contribute millions of dollars to its general fund through these land sales. However, the city emphasizes that proposals must not only offer the right price but also align with the city's timeline and benefit the community. Proposals for these properties are due by January 31st.

Horse-boarding business near Juniper Ridge homeless encampments closed down due to ongoing issues

The owner of Moon Dance Ranch & Appaloosas, a horseback boarding farm near Bend, closed her business due to ongoing issues related to nearby homeless encampments known as Dirt World, located on city-owned Juniper Ridge property. She cited safety concerns, including incidents involving dogs and cars chasing boarders on horses. The encampments house around 200 people and have created challenges for the local community. Despite these issues, there are no immediate plans to clear the camps, as state rules require the identification of managed camp locations within the Urban Growth Boundary before such actions can be taken. The former ranch owner has decided not to reopen her business and now works in an antique store.

This week’s pet is from

The Rawley Project

Meet Zozo

Zozo embodies the truism that good things come in small, 34lb packages. She is a delightful pup whose happy place in life is by her humans side. Her former owner passed away and Zozo found herself in a shelter. Zozo is very good on leash and loves going for walks. She doesn’t pull at all and walks happily by your side. She is a lower energy gal who would do well in an apartment or condo but is also known to get a case of the zoomies from time to time. Zozo has the BEST ears and the cutest little grunts and snore. Zozo is 7 years old and is very affectionate and loves to snuggle by your side. She would do best in a mellow home without cats. She is potty trained and has lovely manners. She loves to play mama to puppies and has recently had bloodwork and some dental work done to make sure she is in tip top shape for her new family. This girl has many more years of love left in her. Zozo is being fostered in Bend, OR and we are looking for a local family to adopt her. She is ready to start her next and best chapter with you!

Adoption Fee: $299 This includes veterinarian wellness exam and certificate of good health, core vaccinations including: rabies vaccination (if over 4 months old), 3 rounds of DAPP (if old enough), Bordetella (kennel cough), deworming, flea/tick preventative, sterilization (spay/neuter), microchip and foster expenses. All dogs have been tested for heart worm, parvo, ehrlichia and anaplasmosis; some dogs have had recent bloodwork done. You also receive one free month of pet insurance through Trupanion and one free training session through Good Pup if you choose.

Our Mission:

The Rawley Project is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit animal protection and welfare organization that was created to help dogs that may be suffering from a life of cruelty, neglect and/or abandonment. We work most often locally, but also globally to find homes and provide care for dogs. We serve our community by providing affordable care to reduce the overpopulation of dogs and cats through our sterilization and wellness program, FIXbend and our global effort El Proyecto Pancho. We strive to be transparent, collaborative, inclusive and progressive. Together, we can make a difference
