What’s a happening?

Many Oregon DMV fees are set to increase Jan. 1 by law

DMV services related to licensing, certification, knowledge and skills testing, vehicle inspections and registrations will increase according to Oregon law 2024.

Dec. 26, 2023

Contact:  Michelle Godfrey, 503-945-5270, [email protected]

SALEM - Driver’s license or ID card, renew vehicle tags, and take a driver’s test (among other DMV services) will see increased fees starting Jan. 1, 2024.

The fee increases are a result of legislation passed this year (House Bill 2100) designed to help DMV recover costs and temporarily avoid service reductions. Plate transfer, replacement plate/sticker, VIN inspection, plate manufacturing, camper/travel trailer/motorhome registration, and dealer document fees are included in the bill.

Other fees, such as vehicle registration and the road usage charge, will see their fourth and final step increase Jan. 1 as part of Oregon’s historic House Bill 2017 transportation investment package.

🚨Update:

Domestic Dispute turned into homicide being investigated by Bend Police

At approximately 9:21 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 26, Bend Police were dispatched to a report of a domestic dispute taking place in the 300 block of SE Lee Lane. The caller indicated a person at the residence had been stabbed.

Police arrived at the Lee Lane home within one minute, where they encountered the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Theodore John Bowser. Bowser, who lived in the home, was taken into custody. Officers then entered the home to render aid to the victim, identified as Bowser’s 60-year-old mother, Rene Lynn Carlson. Carlson lived in the home with Bowser and another family member.

Bowser was taken into custody on suspicion of second-degree murder. He was transported to the Bend Police Department for further investigation before being transferred to St. Charles Bend. He is expected to be lodged in the Deschutes County Jail after being discharged from the hospital. There is no outstanding threat to the community.

Body Cam footage of Icy Crash on Hwy 20

Wednesday around 8:26am, Black Butte Ranch Police responded to assist on a crash on HWY 20 near the entrance to Suttle Lake. A vehicle had slid off the road due to icy conditions. Black Butte Ranch Fire Department medics arrived on scene to assess the patient. A Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputy assisted by setting up west of the accident to slow traffic down. An Oregon State Police trooper arrived around 9:06am to take a report on the crash. Before he was able to even put his vehicle into park on the eastbound shoulder, his suv was struck by an Isuzu commercial truck that had lost control on the ice due to speed and the icy conditions. After hitting the OSP suv, the Isuzu continued forward hitting the front of the Black Butte Ranch Fire Department ambulance and coming to rest near the back of the ambulance. Three medics and a patient from the first crash were in the back of the ambulance. No one was injured, and the driver of the Isuzu was cited for careless driving.

Redmond posts humorous signs to encourage driving safely

If you’re driving on the roads in Redmond, read the signs. You may get a chuckle.

The Redmond Police Department has placed four reader board signs around town this holiday season, encouraging safe driving in some witty ways.

Among the messages:

Naughty or nice? Drive sober, Redmond

Visiting in-laws? Slow down & arrive late!

“We’ve heard a lot from our community members about how much they’ve enjoyed seeing the various signs around town. And we’re really happy to hear that because, ultimately, if they’re talking about it with other individuals, their friends, their family, their coworkers, that’s driving the message further than just those who happened to drive by and see the signs,” said Lt. Curtis Chambers, Redmond Police.
