Holiday Vandalism Hits Wanoga Sno-Park and La Pine Lodgepole Dodgers: Community Shelters and Equipment Targeted

In a disheartening turn of events this holiday season, the community warming shelter at Wanoga Sno-Park, maintained by the Moon Country Snowbusters, fell victim to severe vandalism over the Christmas break. This unfortunate incident has forced the closure of the shelter, a popular spot for locals and visitors to warm up and enjoy family time during the winter months.

According to a detailed Facebook post by the group, the extent of the damage is significant. The vandals left behind graffiti, burned wood, and name carvings in tables. Additionally, the destruction included broken glass, and fire extinguishers were recklessly set off. As of now, the parties responsible for these acts of vandalism have yet to be identified.

The president of Moon Country Snowbusters, Justin Goodman, expressed his dismay, highlighting the shelter's role in the community: “It’s disheartening, especially with the snow coming this next week. We leave it open for people to use and enjoy and get warm and eat their lunch and go about their winter activities. And so now that it's this has happened, we’ve locked it.”

In a related incident, the La Pine Lodgepole Dodgers also reported vandalism and theft. Between December 22nd and December 27th, their beacon checker's sign was forcibly damaged, and the photovoltaic system powering it was stolen. This act of vandalism raises concerns about a potential connection between the two incidents.

The Snowbusters group is now grappling with the aftermath of these events, which have not only impacted the shelter but also the broader community's sense of safety and trust. As investigations continue, community members are urged to come forward with any information that might lead to identifying those responsible for these senseless acts of destruction.

Bend Councilors Approve $11M Tax Break For Jackstraw Project

Jackstraw Project

The Bend City Council approved a tax break for the Jackstraw development next to the Box Factory, under the Multi-Unit Property Tax Exemption (MUPTE) program. This decision was controversial due to concerns that the project, which only includes two affordable housing units out of 313, does not meet higher community benefit standards. Additionally, Killian Pacific, the developer, began construction before applying for the tax break, raising questions about the necessity of the exemption. Councilor Mike Riley voted against the application, citing these concerns. Councilor Megan Perkins supported the decision but acknowledged the need to review and possibly revise the MUPTE program. Councilor Anthony Broadman recused himself from the vote due to previous campaign contributions from Killian Pacific, which were returned.

OSP Seeking Information in Wasco County Vandalism

On Dec. 21, 2023, Oregon State Police responded to a report of multiple road signs that had been cut down and removed in Wasco County. The investigation determined that seven Oregon Department of Transportation Road signs had been removed sometime between Dec. 15-20, 2023. Signs were removed from US 97, OR 293, and OR 218 in Wasco County. The signs were discarded on OR 293 near milepost 3. The estimated repair cost for each sign is approximately $500.

OSP is asking anyone who may have information related to this incident to call dispatch at *677 and reference case number SP23-400394.
