Two Teens Critically Injured in SUV and Shuttle Bus Collision Near Bend

Two teenagers suffered critical injuries in a serious accident on Saturday afternoon. Their SUV lost control and crashed into a Mount Bachelor shuttle bus carrying 16 passengers. The collision took place on Century Drive, where the SUV slid into the oncoming lane.

The SUV hit the bus on the passenger side, causing severe injuries to the two teens inside. Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 12:35 p.m., and the accident happened on state Highway 372 near milepost 5, west of Skyline Ranch Road and close to the entrance to Widgi Creek.

Fortunately, the bus passengers and driver had minor injuries. Only one passenger required evaluation at St. Charles Bend.

The highway was temporarily closed but reopened shortly after 2 p.m., as confirmed by ODOT Region 4 spokeswoman Kacey Davey.

The accident occurred on a busy Saturday for Mount Bachelor ski resort, which had recently received much-anticipated snowfall, attracting numerous visitors. While accidents involving shuttle buses on the route to Mount Bachelor are infrequent, safety concerns persist due to slippery road conditions, often worsened by passenger vehicles driving too fast.

Authorities are continuing their investigation, emphasizing the need for caution and responsible driving, especially during adverse weather conditions and on winding mountain roads.

Quick Action by Redmond Fire & Rescue Averts Major Blaze

REDMOND, OR – A prompt response by Redmond Fire & Rescue, supported by Bend Fire & Rescue, contained a fire at a single-family home at 1542 SW 36th Loop around 3:45 pm Friday. Early reports of a gas line on fire were determined to be a propane tank from a bbq that was safely venting.

Firefighters arrived to intense flames at the rear of the house but managed to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring homes. The situation was under control with no reported injuries, and all occupants were safely evacuated.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause, with damages estimated at $25,000. The incident highlighted the effective collaboration between local fire and police departments in ensuring public safety.

Prineville Resident Charged with Drug Trafficking Following Roadside Search

In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Central Oregon Drug Enforcement Team (CODE) has arrested a Prineville resident on charges related to the trafficking of controlled substances. The arrest was made following a roadside search warrant execution in Deschutes County.

On the morning of January 6, 2024, the CODE team wrapped up an extensive investigation by detaining 35-year-old Travis Ingram of Prineville, Oregon. Identified as a key figure in the regional drug trade, Ingram is accused of trafficking fentanyl and methamphetamine across central Oregon.

Investigative leads indicate that Ingram was involved in importing substantial quantities of these substances, particularly fentanyl pills and methamphetamine, from Yamhill County. He is believed to have been distributing these drugs primarily in the Redmond and Prineville areas.

The arrest followed a nighttime surveillance operation. Working in collaboration with Deschutes County Sheriff deputies, CODE detectives intercepted Ingram, who was driving a 2019 Honda Accord along Highway 20 W at milepost 95, near Sisters city limits. The stop was initially made for tailgating, but adverse winter weather conditions and hazardous roads necessitated additional traffic management support from the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District.

A critical component of the operation was the deployment of CODE's narcotics detection K9, "Bonnie." Bonnie, one of only two dogs in central Oregon trained to detect fentanyl, alerted her handler to the presence of controlled substances in Ingram's vehicle.

Following Bonnie's detection, detectives secured a search warrant for the Honda. The search revealed a significant amount of methamphetamine and counterfeit Oxycodone pills laced with fentanyl in Ingram's possession.

As a result of the investigation and subsequent findings, Travis Ingram has been lodged in the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Jail. He faces charges including the unlawful possession and attempted distribution of Schedule II controlled substances, specifically fentanyl and methamphetamine. This arrest marks a notable victory in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in central Oregon.

Deschutes County opens new North County Campus in Redmond

On Friday, Jan. 12, Deschutes County will open its new North County campus in Redmond. The campus, which is located at 236 and 244 Kingwood, will house a variety of Deschutes County services, including Behavioral Health, Public Health and Veterans’ Services. County services will be offered alongside co-located primary care services provided by Mosaic Community Health.

“Our new North County Campus will provide a hub for residents to access vital services in a convenient location,” said County Administrator Nick Lelack. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to provide streamlined service to our North County residents.”

Community partners and County staff will gather for a grand opening ceremony on Friday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. to celebrate the opening of the new campus and offer public tours. One of the buildings on the campus opened in Fall of 2023.

The County’s decision to invest in a new North County campus came as a direct response to the growing population and needs of the Redmond and surrounding community. It also provides much needed space for many Health Services programs that were outgrowing the space they previously occupied.

Community members can access the following services at the County’s new North County Campus:  Continue Reading
