Redmond's Industrial Expansion: Meeting High Demand for Unique Workspaces
Redmond, known as "The Hub of Central Oregon," is attracting manufacturers due to its strategic location and transportation infrastructure.
The Red Barn Industrial Center is expanding to meet high demand for industrial properties. It offers tax incentives in the Greater Redmond Area Enterprise Zone.
The city's vacancy rate for flexible industrial spaces is low at 1.2%, compared to Bend's 2.4%.
Lawnae Hunter, owner of the Red Barn, wanted to create an aesthetically pleasing and architecturally unique industrial space for the community.
Red Barn's first building is occupied by Seasonal Marketing Inc., and future growth in Redmond's industrial sector looks promising.
The focus is on attracting industrial jobs for long-term economic sustainability.
Redmond is gaining national recognition for its industrial and manufacturing potential.
Does Sisters need a cemetery?
By Bill Bartlett - Nugget Newspaper Sisters
As the population grows in Sisters Country that question comes up more frequently I find. And with our older population โ median age in Sisters is just under 50, whereas Oregon as a whole it is just under 40 โ it seems to be a pertinent question.
We have a cemetery, in fact. Two to be precise. One most everybody knows about - the Camp Polk Cemetery - is also known as Pioneer Cemetery and has been around since 1880.
Turns out, nobody owns the place. At least no person or entity is listed in county records. No taxes are assessed. Maintenance is 100 percent volunteer. But don't assume you or your loved ones can be buried there in spite of there being no formal management. The plots are all taken - as in 'possession is 9/10ths of the law' taken.
The other burial spot is at Church of the Transfiguration where burial is limited to members only. It's not a traditional cemetery with buried caskets and headstones in a field. Only cremains, the remains of somebody cremated, can be accommodated either in their columbarium or sacred grounds.
A columbarium, also called a cinerarium, is a structure for the reverential and usually public storage of funerary urns holding cremains of the dead. The term comes from the Latin 'columba' and originally solely referred to compartmentalized housing for doves and pigeons, also called dovecotes.
The Transfiguration columbarium has 54 niches and more than one cremains can be placed in a niche, such as spouses or siblings, even an entire family. Thirteen are already spoken for. The sacred ground is a small plot where cremains are commingled with others. Room for cremains in the sacred ground is virtually limitless.
I asked Community Development Director Scott Woodford if in any of the multitude of planning or visioning documents the city prepares, has consideration been given for a municipal cemetery?
Central Oregon Exceeds Homelessness Goals with $14.7 Million in Funding
Oasis Village in Redmond
Central Oregon exceeded goals set by Governor Tina Kotek's emergency declaration on homelessness a year ago. They received $14.7 million to create shelter beds and prevent homelessness. They achieved 114 new shelter beds, housed 187 households, and prevented 366 households from homelessness. Funding went to various projects, including converting a motel into apartments and providing support for parolees. The city of Bend moved 61 people into housing. Madras opened its first-ever homeless shelter, and J Bar J Youth Services created shelter beds and conducted outreach. Redmond established Oasis Village, a low-barrier shelter. Some funds were spent on administrative costs, outreach, and unspent funds may be used after the extension of the emergency declaration. Unique challenges exist due to rapid growth in Central Oregon.
Bend man pleads not guilty in fatal shooting outside downtown bar
Caleb Cegers Bradley County Sheriff's Office photo
Story By Bryce Dole - The Bulletin
A Bend man charged in a fatal shooting outside a local bar last summer pleaded not guilty on Monday. Caleb Cegers, 20, pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder, assault and the unlawful use of a weapon in the death of Taylor Wyss, 33, of Redmond. Cegersโ trial is scheduled for January 2025.
Cegers is accused of shooting and killing Wyss with a handgun on Aug. 10, 2023, after a fight broke out around midnight in Dudaโs Billiards Bar on Wall Street in downtown Bend, police said.
Law enforcement investigators believe the fight occurred after Caleb Cegers and his girlfriend, Sadie Madalyn Cole, were asked to leave the bar because they were being disruptive.
Video footage shows Wyss didnโt instigate the fight, Deschutes County District Attorney Steve Gunnels previously told The Bulletin. Authorities said Cole punched a bartender during the fight and then helped Cegers leave the scene in a car after the shooting.
Cole pleaded guilty in December to hindering prosecution and fourth-degree assault. She was sentenced to 10 days in jail and 18 months of probation.
Police said Cegers and his brother, Dahnte Cegers, left the state after the slaying, prompting a nationwide manhunt. They were arrested in Tennessee and extradited back to Deschutes County in October.
Dahnte Cegers is charged with hindering prosecution. His plea hearing is scheduled for Feb. 2.

Local Trivia Answer:
What was Mount Bachelor originally known as before the 1980s?
Answer: C) Bachelor Butte
Originally known as "Bachelor Butte," the name was changed to Mount Bachelor in the 1980s to reflect its status as a significant standalone peak. This distinguishes it from the nearby Three Sisters mountains.
