Attempted Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested At Bend Hotel

A Bend man, believed to be involved in an attempted armed robbery last week, was arrested early Tuesday morning. Bend Police had been searching for 38-year-old Ethan Christensen since January 10 and offered a reward for information on his whereabouts.

At around 1:15 a.m., BPD learned Christensen was staying at the Home2 Suites hotel 21241 N E Livingston Dr near 27th and Bear Creek Dr. in Bend. The Central Oregon Emergency Response Team activated and officers took Christensen into custody without incident.

The search began after a man reported being the victim of an attempted robbery at a Bend car wash, late on January 9. He told police he stopped to clear snow from his truck and was approached by two men who demanded his wallet and money. One man had a gun. The three fought before the victim was able to drive away.

Permanent Overnight Shelter Opens in Madras

Madras, Oregon, has opened a year-round Secure Care Shelter just in time for sub-freezing weather conditions. The shelter, operating from 6 pm to 7 am daily, represents a significant achievement for the Jefferson County Faith Based Network, which had previously provided temporary emergency shelters during extreme weather.

Shelter Coordinator Pat Abernathy expressed excitement about this development, emphasizing the joy of helping the homeless population. She also outlined plans to expand services, including the addition of a case manager and various resources such as foot care and haircuts by licensed professionals.

Abernathy highlighted the strong support from community partners, including the city and the police department, as well as the churches in the area, creating a close-knit community in Jefferson County.

The City of Madras played a crucial role in securing grants for the Oak Street project, making the permanent shelter a reality.

Deschutes County Fair & Rodeo announces its 2024 Rodeo Queen and Grand Marshal

This story first appeared KTVZ

REDMOND, Ore. -  Monday evening, the Deschutes County Fair Association held their annual meeting to officially announce the crowning of the 2024 Rodeo Queen and the introduction of the 2024 Grand Marshal.

Rodeo queens and grand marshals are a traditional part of the Deschutes County Fair & Rodeo .

The Rodeo Queen, who typically serves as an ambassador for the fair and rodeo, will participate in events, promoting the sport of rodeo.

The Grand Marshal is an honorary position, given to an distinguished individual who leads parades and ceremonial aspects of fair events including the rodeo.

This year’s titles have been bestowed upon Kethry Nolan, our Deschutes County Fair Rodeo Queen, and Elton Gregory, our Deschutes County Fair and Rodeo Grand Marshal.

Kethry Nolan said: “Everything about the rodeo culture is amazing. But to narrow it down, my personal favorite is steer wrestling. This event, where the horse and rider has to work in complete harmony. It requires steer wrestling and exceptional skill, strength, agility and balance. The ability to jump off a galloping horse onto a moving steer and then use precise technique to bring to the ground displays remarkable athleticism.”

Elton Gregory said: “The Deschutes County Fair Association introduced their members earlier. Each of them should have stood up and taken a bow, because they work so long and so hard. But the most important thing that I found with this group, which is a little different, was their passion for doing what they're doing.”

You’ll be able to see Kethry and Elton in action as they’ll be representing the 104 th edition of the Bi-Mart Deschutes County Fair & Rodeo – returning July 31 st through August 4 th . This year’s fair will feature championship rodeo, top name concerts, animals, carnival rides, cotton candy and corn dogs, along with shopping, exhibits and food.

Good Samaritan Rescues Stranded Couple from Snowy Predicament

In a display of kindness and community spirit, a local resident came to the rescue of a stranded couple battling the elements during a recent snowstorm in Bend, Oregon. The incident unfolded on Portland Ave late in the evening, where temperatures had plummeted to below zero, and the road was covered in treacherous ice and snow berms.

The couple, who had been struggling for over an hour to free their car from the icy grip of the road, found themselves in a desperate situation. Despite their best efforts, the freezing temperatures and adverse road conditions had left them stuck.

In their time of need, the couple turned to passing cars for help, including a snow plow truck. However, to their dismay, each vehicle passed them by without offering assistance, as if they were invisible.

Just when it seemed like hope was dwindling, a guardian angel appeared in the form of a kind-hearted man driving a larger SUV. Without hesitation, this compassionate stranger stopped and extended a helping hand.

To everyone's amazement, this good Samaritan wasn't armed with traditional winter rescue tools. Instead, he ingeniously wielded a leaf blower to clear the snow from beneath the stranded car. The leaf blower proved to be a surprisingly effective tool, and with this act of ingenuity, the couple's vehicle was finally freed from the icy trap.

The grateful couple wanted to express their gratitude by offering payment for this stranger's assistance. However, the humble hero declined, emphasizing that helping fellow community members in need was payment enough for him.

It turns out that this kind-hearted hero was Tyler Koontz, who, along with his wife Delia, understands the value of helping others during challenging times. Delia Koontz shared her pride in her husband's actions, stating that Tyler is the kind of person anyone would hope to encounter when facing adversity.

The heartwarming story quickly gained attention on a local community Facebook group, where residents applauded Tyler's selflessness and resourcefulness. Some even expressed interest in adopting his leaf blower strategy for winter emergencies.

In a world where busy lives and personal concerns often take precedence, this heartening incident serves as a reminder of the power of compassion and community. Tyler Koontz's act of kindness is a shining example of how small gestures can make a significant difference, particularly during adverse weather conditions.

As the residents of Bend, Oregon, continue to endure the challenges of winter, let Tyler Koontz's act of generosity inspire us all to lend a helping hand when our neighbors are in need. After all, as one commenter wisely noted, "Paying it forward is payment enough, and community is how it works—money is not everything."
