Local college-bound families left in limbo as financial aid roll-outs delayed

Wednesday, January 31st 2024

Changes to a common federal student aid application system are causing delays for students and families who, for now, don’t know if they’ll have the money for college.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the way most students access the funds to pay for higher education. Recent changes to the program were supposed to make the application process faster and easier in the long term. But now, the launch of these changes has caused delays in financial aid rollouts to families.

“If I don’t get that money soon, then the question that I‘m gonna be asking myself and what my parents are going to be concerned about is ‘How am I going to pay for college?’ My parents can only do so much for me and I can only work so hard for myself,” Bend High School senior Jose Perez said. “Although I’m being admitted to all these colleges, the question is ‘Will I even be able to apply or attend those colleges if I don’t receive that federal grant money?'”

The FAFSA application normally opens to everyone in early October. This past year, it was delayed until Dec. 31 and was only made available in a limited basis while the U.S. Department of Education worked on the new redesign.

The application still hasn’t been made available to everyone and colleges are affected nationwide.

Quick Police Response Leads to Arrests in City Pump Incident

Madras, OR - In a commendable display of rapid response and community cooperation, Madras Police Officers swiftly apprehended suspects involved in an incident at the City Pump gas station and store on Wednesday, January 24, 2024.

At approximately 3:45 pm, Madras Police Officers received a call reporting shots fired at the City Pump gas station and store located at 178 Southwest 4th Street. The police officers acted swiftly, arriving at the scene within minutes of being dispatched. Thanks to their prompt actions, two suspects, Dondi Leon Foster, Sr. (47), and Kristan Lee Smith (25), were detained, and the area was secured without further incident.

Upon questioning, Mr. Foster was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Short-Barreled Rifle and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Ms. Smith faced charges of Robbery and Theft. During the investigation, officers also linked Mr. Foster to a shooting that occurred on January 22, 2024, resulting in an additional arrest for Assault and Reckless Endangering.

Officer Ryan Kathrein emphasized the crucial role of local businesses in assisting with the investigation, stating, "We appreciate the cooperation of our local businesses. Surveillance video from City Pump and surrounding businesses was extremely helpful in developing and confirming evidence for our case."

Later that evening, Hattie Agnes Hart (38) was arrested in connection with the City Pump incident, facing charges of Robbery and Theft.

Police Chief Timothy Plummer praised the collective efforts that led to a successful resolution, saying, "Everyone involved in this incident performed exactly the way the system is designed to operate for success. The store manager called 9-1-1 immediately, Frontier 9-1-1 dispatched clear and accurate information providing officers the ability to respond quickly. Those initial responses, combined with excellent detective work and mutual aid from neighboring law enforcement agencies, are the necessary components for creating safer communities."

The investigation remains ongoing, and the Madras Police Department encourages anyone with related information to contact Officer Kathrein at 541-475-2424 (x208).

Madras Animal shelter asks county for five-year contract

Madras, OR Rockn EZ Rescue Ranch board requests a 5-year extension to run the animal shelter, along with a pay increase from $240,000 to $300,000 yearly. They are facing challenges due to past mismanagement. Last summer, they took over the shelter after Three Rivers Humane Society left, inheriting debt and other issues. They argue that they need funds for a shelter manager and are facing a capacity crisis with many unneutered animals being surrendered. County commissioners are hesitant about the increased funding request, and discussions are ongoing, with a decision deadline in February.
