12th annual Big Wave Challenge held at Mt. Bachelor, bringing people from all over to compete
By Kelsey McGee
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Snowboarders surfed their way down the slopes at Mt. Bachelor on Saturday for the Gerry Lopez Big Wave Challenge . Instead of catching the waves in Hawaii, hundreds signed up for the 12th annual event, having a blast doing on the mountain.
The sought-after event has brought people from all over. Kiana Putman came to the mountain all the way from Alaska.
"The big waves are here," Putman said.
Big Wave surfer and Mt. Bachelor ambassador Gerry Lopez told us about the event.
"We make waves out of snow, and we're having a surf contest up here on the mountain," he said.
The event was inspired by Lopez's passion for surf and snow. Lopez became the State of Hawaii Junior Surfing Champion at the age of 14, and won the Master of Pipeline Award in 1972.
He moved to Bend from Maui in the '90s and has since called Bachelor his home mountain.
Putman said, "This is really cool, because it's freestyle. So you can kind of use your creative expression. It's a different judging format, and, I don't know -- it's something fun and different."
The Big Wave Challenge is a snowboard contest held on a custom-built course. It features a series of quarter pipes and banked corners, creating a series of wave-like features.
Judges scored competitors on speed, power, overall performance and impression.
Lopez said, " The unfortunate part of it is it's snowboard only. So we can't include the skiers, which doesn't really lend itself to the general feeling for our event, which is all about aloha, which is a feeling that, you know, comes from Hawaii but is very present here in Oregon."
The entry fee was $78, and all proceeds from registration will go toward Pat Malendoski. He's a local snowboarder diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Residents Oppose Proposed Apartment Complex on Bend's Awbrey Butte
Neighbors on Bend's Awbrey Butte are protesting against a proposed four-story, 40-unit apartment complex near Awbrey Road and Mount Washington Drive. The Save the Butte organization argues the development is too large for the area and is pushing for a more reasonable alternative. The City of Bend has escalated the matter to a hearing officer due to community controversy. The hearing is scheduled for April 4, with a decision expected within three weeks. Many residents have submitted objections, citing concerns about affordability and traffic impact. The goal is to find a more suitable proposal for the location.

Culver Woman Arrested After Crash Involving School Bus in Redmond
A Culver woman was arrested on DUII, reckless driving, and assault charges after crashing her SUV into a small school bus carrying Baker County Future Farmers of America students. The crash happened on Highway 126 in Redmond, with three students sustaining minor injuries. The driver faces multiple charges and was released pending a court date. The students were in town for an FFA convention and were awarded before the accident. School officials praised responders and parents for their support, emphasizing the dangers of drunk driving. The highway was closed briefly, and one student remained hospitalized.
Central Oregon Locavore raising money for new freezer for more chicken, fish options
Central Oregon nonprofit Locavore, which has helped local farmers and supported food distribution in the region for 15 years, wants to expand some food options. But it needs some help from the community to do it.
It has launched the Chicken 'n Fish Final Freezer fundraiser to raise $15,000 to buy a commercial freezer. The goal is to have the proper equipment to bring in more chicken and fish options into its indoor farmers market.
"One of the reasons it's a big need in Central Oregon. We have very few available butchers and there are a lot of ranchers with a lot of animals that need processing and they have to secure those slots early on”
Locavore said a reliable, efficient, commercial glass-front freezer can cost $10,000 or more per three-door unit. But the non-profit says it will also need to do some extensive and expensive electrical work.
Locavore said any donations made on Instagram or Facebook after March 21 will be matched up to $2,500. That match is being made by an unnamed but long-time Central Oregon Locavore supporter.
Donations are also being taken here.
Locavore is located at 1841 NE 3rd Street in Bend, next to Carl's Jr.
