One Arrested After Altercation Results in Burned Trailer, Stolen Dog

In the early hours of April 4, 2024, a series of events unfolded at the Scandia Village RV Park in Bend, Oregon, resulting in significant property damage, a stolen dog, and two arrests.

At 3:05 a.m., Bend Police responded to a hazardous situation at NE Third Street and Franklin Avenue. They found 54-year-old Edward Rene Bales obstructing traffic in a gray Dodge Ram 1500. Further investigation revealed that Bales and 26-year-old Austin Jordan Stapleton had been drinking together, leading to a physical altercation during their drive back to Bales' residence on NE Ross Road.

Stapleton reportedly punched Bales, took his house keys, and fled on foot. Bales was arrested on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII), while officers began searching for Stapleton.

Meanwhile, at approximately 4:47 a.m., Bend Police and Bend Fire were called to the Scandia Village RV Park regarding a blazing RV. Bales' fifth-wheel trailer was discovered fully engulfed, posing a threat to nearby structures. Thanks to the swift response of Bend Fire, the fire was contained, and neighboring properties were spared from damage. Authorities initiated an arson investigation into the incident.

Approximately thirty minutes later, Deschutes County Sheriffโ€™s deputies responded to a DUII report on U.S. Highway 97 in La Pine. They apprehended Stapleton, who was driving a green GMC Yukon. Notably, Bales' dog, Mojo, was found in Stapleton's vehicle during the traffic stop.

Stapleton was subsequently arrested by Bend Police on charges including DUII, assault, arson, robbery, theft, and burglary. He was booked into the Deschutes County Jail, marking the culmination of a tumultuous night that left property destroyed and a pet temporarily missing.

The investigation into these events continues as authorities work to piece together the sequence of events and ensure accountability for the damages incurred.

NE Bend tent fire leads to transientโ€™s arrest; railroad traffic briefly stopped to put it out

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A man was arrested on a misdemeanor reckless burning charge after a tent fire in northeast Bend Friday morning. It prompted a brief closure of the BNSF Railway tracks so Bend Fire crews could cross the tracks with their hose.

The fire was reported around 9:15 a.m. near the northbound Bend Parkway offramp, off NE First Street and Olney Avenue. Fire crews were on scene for about 40 minutes.

There were no injuries, structures damaged or road closures or detours due to the fire, Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller said.

$1.3 Billion Winning Powerball ticket was sold in Portland, OR on Saturday

A Powerball player in Oregon won a jackpot worth more than $1.3 billion on Sunday, ending a winless streak that had stretched more than three months.

The single ticket matched all six numbers drawn to win the jackpot worth $1.326 billion, Powerball said in a statement.

The jackpot has a cash value of $621 million if the winner chooses to take a lump sum rather than an annuity paid over 30 years, with an immediate payout followed by 29 annual installments. The prize is subject to federal taxes, while many states also tax lottery winnings.

The winning numbers drawn early Sunday morning were: 22, 27, 44, 52, 69 and the red Powerball 9.

Until the latest drawing, no one had won Powerballโ€™s top prize since New Yearโ€™s Day, amounting to 41 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner, tying a streak set twice before in 2022 and 2021.

Oregon Lottery says the winning Powerball ticket was sold in Portland on Saturday, but doesnโ€™t mention at which store it was sold. The agency adds that the winner has a year to come forward and claim the prize.

โ€œI want to congratulate the winner on this life changing moment. No one in Oregon has ever won a prize on this scale, and itโ€™s very exciting for our staff and players,โ€ said Oregon Lottery Director Mike Wells in a written statement Sunday.

The largest Powerball prize previously won in Oregon was a $340 million jackpot in 2005, and the last time a Powerball jackpot was won in the state was in 2018, when a Salem man took home $150.4 million, according to Oregon Lottery.

The $1.326 billion prize ranks as the eighth largest in U.S. lottery history. As the prizes grow, the drawings attract more ticket sales and the jackpots subsequently become harder to hit. The gameโ€™s long odds for the weekend drawing were 1 in 292.2 million.

Saturday night's scheduled drawing was held up and took place in the Florida Lottery studio just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday to enable one of the organizers to complete required procedures before the scheduled time of 10:59 p.m., Powerball said in a statement.

โ€œPowerball game rules require that every single ticket sold nationwide be checked and verified against two different computer systems before the winning numbers are drawn,โ€ the statement said. โ€œThis is done to ensure that every ticket sold for the Powerball drawing has been accounted for and has an equal chance to win. Tonight, we have one jurisdiction that needs extra time to complete that pre-draw process.โ€

Powerball is played in 45 states plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The free event had plenty of vendors offering a variety of western wear, items for the horse lover and more.

The Oregon Horse Council hopes to bring back the marketplace next year.
