Highway 22 construction starting this week will cause delays between Salem, Bend

People driving from Salem to Bend likely will experience delays beginning this week as construction crews repair and repave Highway 22 between Big Cliff Dam and Mongold Day Use Area.

The highway surface in that area is breaking apart and cracking, and maintenance crews are having to do more frequent repairs and patching to keep the road usable, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

There will be lane closures with flaggers, and at times, a pilot car will guide traffic through the stretch of the North Santiam Highway between Gates and Detroit.

ODOT said road construction crews will start by repairing the existing road and expect to start repaving lanes in mid-May.

Crews will be working during the day and night during the project.

ODOT said the work also will include new striping, ,installing rumble strips in the center of the road, replacing guardrails, installing rockfall fencing on the side of hills, and bridge repair.

The project cost is estimated at more than $6.8 million.

Structure Fire on Rickard Rd Causes Significant Damage

Bend, Oregon - April 14, 2024: Bend Fire & Rescue responded to a structure fire at 21910 Rickard Rd early this Sunday morning, leading to extensive damage to multiple properties. The incident, reported at 12:44 am, initially involved a barn fire that quickly spread to a nearby residence.

Upon arrival, emergency crews encountered a fully engulfed 1,400 square foot shop/storage building, with flames extending to nearby trees, vegetation, and the exterior of a small house adjacent to the shop. Firefighters swiftly contained the blaze, adopting a defensive strategy to protect surrounding structures. Despite their efforts, the shop and its contents were declared a complete loss.

The fire's intensity also affected the exterior of the nearby small house, rendering it uninhabitable due to significant damage. Fortunately, the occupant managed to escape unharmed and declined assistance from the Red Cross.

An update from Bend Fire & Rescue revealed that due to the extensive damage to the shop building, the exact cause of the fire could not be pinpointed. The estimated damage stands at approximately $200,000, encompassing losses to the shop/storage building, a small tractor, a passenger car, two pickup trucks, two small travel trailers, and personal belongings stored within the structure.

In light of this incident, Bend Fire & Rescue emphasized the critical role of smoke alarms in saving lives. Only one functioning smoke alarm was present in the affected residence, as the other had been removed following a recent malfunction. Authorities urge residents to ensure their smoke alarms are operational, replacing any units older than 10 years for optimal safety.

Tragic Motor Vehicle Accident Claims Lives of Husband and Wife in Gilchrist, OR

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the identities of the victims involved in the fatal motor vehicle accident near Gilchrist, Oregon, have been released. The driver, Bobby J. Jones, a 64-year-old male, and his passenger, Tami M. Jones, a 61-year-old female, both residents of Gilchrist, lost their lives in the devastating crash.

The incident took place on April 12, 2024, around 10:46 am when Deputies from the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office responded to a call regarding a Dodge Durango that had veered off Knott Road and collided with a tree near MP 1. Upon arrival at the scene, emergency personnel found the male passenger trapped in the back seat of the vehicle, while the female front passenger and male driver had tragically succumbed to their injuries.

Investigations revealed that the Durango was speeding eastbound on Knott Road when it attempted to overtake a commercial vehicle. In a harrowing sequence of events, the Durango swerved across lanes, narrowly avoiding a collision with an oncoming pickup truck before crashing into a tree off the road.

Deputies determined that the deceased driver was at fault for the accident. However, the passenger in the back seat was successfully rescued by Bend Fire and rushed to St. Charles Bend for treatment of serious injuries.

Oregon State Police, Deschutes County Public Works, and Bend Fire all collaborated in responding to the scene and managing the aftermath of this tragic incident. Knott Road was temporarily closed for investigation purposes.

Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of Bobby J. Jones and Tami M. Jones during this difficult time as they mourn the loss of their cherished family members. May their souls rest in peace as the community comes together to support those affected by this terrible tragedy.
