Three COCC students selected for All-Oregon Academic Team

Central Oregon Community College is proud to announce that students Anthony Alegria, Kris Kent and Jordan Taylor have been selected to represent the school on the Oregon Community College Association’s 2024 All-Oregon Academic Team.

Additionally, Kent was chosen as a national Coca-Cola Academic Team Bronze Scholar recipient by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

The students will be honored at the OCCA’s All-Oregon Academic Team luncheon event on Friday, April 19, at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, with state Rep. Tawna Sanchez, D-Portland, providing the keynote address.

To earn the team distinction, students must demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service. A minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA and completion of at least 54 credits is required. Nominated by a faculty member, finalists undergo a review process by the college’s committee for academic excellence.

Aviation student Anthony Alegria of Washington state is earning a professional airplane pilot degree while attaining a 4.0 GPA and conducting a work-study position with COCC’s veterans department. Alegria is a former U.S. Marine sergeant whose airbase service inspired him to become a pilot. He plans to initially become a flight instructor locally and then attend the Oregon Institute of Technology for a bachelor’s degree in operational management, with the goal of working for a major airline carrier.

Kris Kent, originally of Ravena, New York, is an aviation student earning a degree as a professional helicopter pilot. The dean’s list student, with a 4.0 GPA, is a U.S. Army veteran and former EMT and firefighter. Kent was recently named a 2024 Coca-Cola Academic Team Bronze Scholar — one of just 50 in the country — by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, a scholarship administered by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He aspires to serve as a helicopter flight instructor in Central Oregon and eventually transition to aerial pilot work in forestry or agriculture.

Jordan Taylor of Bend is a natural resources student who hopes to work in the field of wildlife conservation, contributing to the protection of endangered species and habitats. The dean’s list student, with a 3.9 GPA, is planning to transfer to Oregon State University for a bachelor’s degree in natural resources. She envisions a career working closely with organizations and agencies dedicated to preserving biodiversity and finding sustainable solutions to environmental challenges.

The All-Oregon Academic Team is part of the All-State Community College Academic Team program that started in 1994 in the states of Mississippi and Missouri. Today, 38 states host All-State Academic Team programs each year, focusing on two-year colleges and recognizing exceptional students. The OCCA sponsors the annual event, in partnership with the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, which awards some $37 million in scholarships nationally to community college students.

Important Primary Election Information for Deschutes County Voters

The May 21, 2024 Primary Election is underway, and the Deschutes County Elections Office is sharing some important information with voters as they prepare to exercise their right to vote.

If you are an active registered voter in the county, you should expect to receive an official primary ballot by mail in early May. Once you vote your ballot, you can return it either by mail or at any of the secure, official drop boxes available throughout Deschutes County.

In Oregon, the two major political parties, Democratic and Republican, have chosen to hold closed primaries. This means that only voters who are affiliated with one of these political parties can vote in that party’s primary.

“Nonaffiliated voters and voters affiliated with a different political party than the Democratic or Republican parties will still receive ballots for this election, but only for non-partisan contests, like judicial offices, County Commissioner or local measures,” said County Clerk Steve Dennison.

“It is recommended that voters review their registration online or call our office to ensure their information is up to date. Voters can access, review and update their information through the My Vote portal on the Secretary of State’s website.”

Here is some important information and dates you should know for the 2024 Primary Election:

  • April 30 – Deadline to register to vote, update your voter registration, or affiliate with a major political party.

  • May 1 – Ballots mailed to voters. All ballots include a postage-paid return envelope for you to mail in your voted ballot, or if you prefer, you can drop it off at an official ballot drop box location.

  • May 3 – Deschutes County drop boxes open for voted ballots. Visit the Deschutes County Clerk website to find a drop box location near you.

  • May 21 – Election Day. Ballots must be received at a drop box by 8 p.m. or postmarked by the United States Postal Service (USPS) by this date and received by the Clerk’s Office by Tuesday, May 28, 2024 to be counted.

Preliminary election results will be available on the Deschutes County Clerk website  starting at 8 p.m. on Election Day.

You can find more information and the answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the County Clerk/Elections website

Driver Crashes Car After Fleeing Law Enforcement In Multiple Jurisdictions

Date: April 15, 2024

Location: HWY 97 MP 131

Arrested: Liam Bryne, 18-year-old male, Bend, OR

Charges:

- 1 Count Felony Elude

- 1 Count Reckless Driving

- 9 Counts Reckless Endangering

- 1 Count Criminal Mischief

On April 15, 2024, at approximately 6:15 pm, a high-speed chase unfolded across multiple jurisdictions, culminating in a dramatic crash and the arrest of 18-year-old Liam Bryne of Bend, Oregon. The incident, which involved speeds well in excess of 100 mph, began in Jefferson County before traversing through Deschutes County.

Deputies from the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office were alerted to a Dodge Charger speeding southbound through Jefferson County. Prior to their involvement, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office had initiated, and subsequently terminated, a pursuit of the vehicle due to safety concerns. Despite the discontinuation of the chase, Bryne continued to navigate traffic recklessly as he entered Deschutes County.

A Deschutes County Sheriff's Deputy attempted to intercept the Charger near Terrebonne but was forced to abandon the pursuit as Bryne accelerated to an estimated 120 mph. The chase continued through Redmond, with Bryne maneuvering through streets such as O'Neill Way and Canal Blvd in a bid to evade law enforcement.

The situation took a decisive turn when another Deputy successfully deployed spike strips at the HWY 97 Deschutes Junction underpass at Tumalo Road. The Charger, unable to evade the strips, veered off the road, crashed through wire fencing and irrigation pipes, and finally came to a halt in a field. Law enforcement officers from Deschutes County and Oregon State Police swiftly apprehended Bryne without further incident.

Following the crash, Bryne was transported to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for evaluation of any potential injuries. He is expected to be booked into the Deschutes County Adult Jail on multiple charges, including Felony Elude, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangering, and Criminal Mischief.

The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office expressed gratitude to the Oregon State Police and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office for their collaboration during the investigation and apprehension.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, a comprehensive law enforcement agency overseeing various operations, including patrol, investigations, and search and rescue, serves over 200,000 residents across Deschutes County. Led by Sheriff L. Shane Nelson, the agency maintains a dedicated team of personnel ensuring the safety and security of the county's 3,055 square miles.

Madras Pair Rescued In Ochoco Mountains Operation

PRINEVILLE, OR -- A couple from Madras got stuck in the Ochoco Mountains, Sunday evening, prompting a rescue operation by the Crook County Sheriff's Office.

The pair called 911 at about 6:15 p.m. and reported their vehicle was stuck in the mud in the Big Summit Prairie area. They were unable to dig out and the woman was due to take medication at 8 p.m.

Crook County Search and Rescue deployed nine members. A hasty team took off almost immediately, due to the potential for a medical issue.

They took two vehicles, including a tracked vehicle. They arrived at the pair at about 8:20 p.m.

SAR officials say one person marked the road to help rescuers find their exact location. The pair and their dog were taken to a friend's house in Prineville. There was no medical need during the operation.

CCSO reminds travelers snow is melting. But, as roads open, mud may be an issue on lightly traveled roads. Visitors are encouraged to let someone know where you're going and when you plan to return.

Foodie Crawl To Benefit Local Food Bank As Need Grows

BEND, OR -- NeighborImpact continues to see a rise in food insecurity in the tri-county area. "In the last year, we served over 800,000 food boxes and meal sites across Central Oregon, which is absolutely a record," says Food Program Manager Jordan Reeher, "And numbers just, unfortunately, keep going up around the region."The nonprofit is a regional food bank, "We receive a lot of food from Oregon Food Bank and then distribute it to a lot of our partner agencies around Central Oregon," says Reeher, "They’re a lot of times where someone is receiving the food directly. That’s where people go if they’re getting hot meals, if they’re getting a food box." He adds, "The bulk of the work we do is providing food to those partner agencies. We want to support that network, make sure that we have food available and that we can distribute that." Reeher tells KBND News the need for food has grown since the pandemic, "Through our network, we did four million pounds that we distributed to our partner agencies, and then another two million pounds that our food pantries and meal sites distributed themselves.

So, six million pounds that went out in just the last year."

Much of their work is donor supported. But an upcoming fundraiser will help continue efforts through the year. The US Bank Foodie Crawl is April 28th, from 2-4 p.m., "We always call it a pub crawl meets progressive dinner. It’s basically the best of both. You get to just walk around, try out some new spots, try out some new food." Reeher says, "You get to walk around on a beautiful day downtown and eat some little sampler plates from the best restaurants in Bend. It doesn’t get much better than that." There's also an after-party at McMenamins, from 4-6 p.m., "And all of it just supports the food program, and makes it so the work we do is possible."
