Sunriver Resort to plant more than 400 trees on Arbor Day in community restoration effort

SUNRIVER, Ore. (KTVZ) Sunriver Resort, the Pacific Northwest's treasured resort destination managed by CoralTree Hospitality, will plant more than 400 Ponderosa Pines around the Woodlands Golf Course on Arbor Day, Friday, April 26.

For the second year running, a Ponderosa bare root seedling will be planted in honor of every guest who stays at the resort on Earth Day, April 22. This includes 300 guest stays plus an additional 100 donated by the resort.

The planting ceremony will begin at 1pm PST at the Woodlands Golf Course. Efforts will be led by Sunriver Resort’s sustainability committee, with resort staff and Sunriver Realty associates also in attendance to celebrate the initiative.

The locally-sourced Ponderosa Pine seedlings, which have been growing for the last two years and are between 6-12” tall, will be provided by Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory and Project Ponderosa.

Project Ponderosa is a mission-driven nursery dedicated to the restoration of Central Oregon’s iconic ponderosa pines and fostering a collective effort towards environmental conservation.

The Ponderosa Pine is a long-lived evergreen tree native to western North America and is known for its distinctive orange-brown bark with black crevices and long, slender needles. The trees provide many benefits to the local ecosystem, including improving air and water quality, providing habitat for wildlife, and reducing erosion.

"We’re looking forward to planting another 400 trees this year for Arbor Day as we  continue our commitment to preserving this area’s natural beauty for decades to come,” said Lindsay Borkowski, director of sales and marketing at Sunriver Resort. “We’re grateful to Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory and Project Ponderosa for partnering with us on this important shared mission of environmental conservation.”

"A big ‘thank you’ to the guests who are staying at Sunriver Resort on Earth Day, and whom we’re able to represent with a tree donation on Arbor Day,” said Josh Willis, director of operations at Sunriver Resort. “These seedlings will continue to grow and thrive for several hundred years, which underscores our dedication to long term environmental sustainability and stewardship.”

Shooting Incident Near China Hat Road Leaves One Injured, Investigation Ongoing

Bend, Oregon - April 22, 2024:

An incident involving gunfire near China Hat Road, approximately at mile post 2, resulted in one individual sustaining non-life-threatening injuries and being transported to St. Charles Bend Hospital. Here are the details as released by Sergeant Jason Wall of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office:

On April 21st, 2024, at 4:00 p.m., authorities responded to a report of a shooting south of China Hat Road. The reporting party, while uncooperative with Deschutes County 911 Dispatch, provided limited information indicating that a person had been shot.

Upon arrival, deputies were able to ascertain that a 32-year-old male had been shot and subsequently transported to St. Charles Bend by ground ambulance. The injuries, resulting from a single gunshot, were reported as non-life-threatening.

Investigation revealed that an altercation involving two local males escalated when Subject #1 produced a firearm. In response, Subject #2 also armed himself and discharged the firearm, striking Subject #1 in the hand and abdomen.

A third party not involved in the altercation facilitated the transportation of Subject #1 to China Hat Road, where emergency services intervened and transported him to the hospital for medical attention.

Law enforcement gathered all pertinent evidence related to the incident and conducted interviews with witnesses. The investigation remains ongoing, with updates to be provided as new information surfaces.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, a comprehensive law enforcement agency serving the community, continues to oversee the case, ensuring thorough criminal investigations and maintaining public safety across Deschutes County.
