Bull jumps Sisters Rodeo arena fence, charges bystanders
A bull jumped a fence and escaped from the Sisters Rodeo arena during the bull-riding event at Saturday night’s performance, striking and injuring three people while it ran through the rodeo grounds, sparking a frantic run for safety, authorities said. Rodeo officials said Sunday all of the injured had returned home from the hospital.
Deschutes County sheriff’s Sergeant Joshua Spano said several ambulances were called to the scene and that "they caught the bull pretty quick."
Lt. Jayson Janes said Sunday that deputies transported one patient with non-life-threatening injuries and that a deputy also sustained minor injuries while responding to the bull's location.
The packed crowd was singing along with Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” from loudspeakers when the circling bull is seen jumping the fence.
“Get to higher ground, everybody! There’s a bull out!” the announcer quickly says. “Get to higher ground! Open the gates, Billy! Everybody in the grass: Get under the grandstands or up in the grandstands! The pickup men are coming around!"
“Everybody keep your eyes open!” he continues. “A bull is in the grass – a bull has jumped the arena fence, and he’s in the grass! If you’re in the grass, get out of the way! Pickup men are coming around!”

Madras, Oregon –The City of Madras announces the closure of the current homeless camp located in the Northwest Willow Creek Camping Area, effective 7:00 AM on June 11, 2024. City officials will be on-site to facilitate the closure and ensure a smooth transition for individuals residing in the camp.
The decision to close the Northwest Willow Creek Camping Area comes after careful consideration and evaluation of various factors, including concerns regarding public health, environmental impact, and safety hazards associated with the camp's location. Sunriver Police hosting public forum on plans to install two automated license plate readers
The Sunriver Police Department is holding a public forum Monday afternoon to share information and answer questions about the planned addition of automated license plate readers at two locations in the resort community.
The solar-powered cameras from Flock Safety will be installed at Sunriver’s Cottonwood Road entrance and on South Century Drive near the main “waterfall circle,” hopefully by July, officials said in a June article in the Sunriver Scene, published by the Sunriver Owners Association.
The presentation is planned at 4 p.m. Monday at the SHARC (Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic and Recreation Center).
Police Chief Stephen Lopez said the addition will help fight crime by providing police officers with a notification if license plates appear in the National Crime Information Center’s database and have been recorded as stolen, involved in a crime or connected to an Amber Alert or Silver Alert.
“These can and will help with some criminal activity, both in Sunriver and regionally,” said Lopez, who gave a presentation last month to the SROA and Sunriver Service District boards.

Jefferson County Fire crews put out large haystack fire, say older hay bales spontaneously combusted
Madras, OR - Jefferson County Fire & EMS crews responded Sunday morning to put out a haystack fire that was found to be to a large pile of 2- to 3-year-old hay bales that had spontaneously combusted.
The report came in shortly after 7 a.m. in the area of South Adams Drive, Deputy Chief of Prevention Jared Earnest said. Crews arrived to find the large haystack actively burning but not threatening any structures, he said.
Several personnel and apparatus were dispatched to put out the fire, Earnest said, and were provided “invaluable” assistance from the property owners who provided heavy machinery.
Due to the size and number of older bales that were on fire, the pile was pulled apart and moved to a large gravel clearing. Earnest said the fire will continue to smolder and put up smoke, possibly for a few days.
Jefferson County Fire and EMS offered thanks to Warm Springs Fire and Safety for providing an ambulance for area coverage during the incident.
Bend-Area Man Charged with Attempted Murder after Shooting Incident
Darron Jay Reece, a 36-year-old man, faced charges of second-degree attempted murder. This came after an alleged altercation that culminated in Reece reportedly shooting Lowell Edward Templeton, a 56-year-old individual, in the face with a .40-caliber handgun. Templeton, despite sustaining severe injuries, managed to transport himself to the St. Charles Redmond ER for urgent medical attention.
Deschutes County District Attorney Steve Gunnels revealed that Templeton's injuries were life-threatening, prompting his transfer via Life Flight helicopter to Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland. While OHSU declined to list Templeton in the public patient directory, Gunnels confirmed that Templeton is recovering and has regained the ability to communicate.
Following the shooting, Reece voluntarily surrendered to Prineville police on Thursday, relinquishing the alleged weapon used in the incident. The circumstances leading to the shooting remain undisclosed, with authorities refraining from releasing details about the crime. It was noted, however, that both Reece and Templeton resided in RVs, although the nature of their relationship remains ambiguous.
On the legal front, Reece faces a series of charges, including first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, the latter stemming from a prior felony conviction in Deschutes County in 2017 for third-degree assault.
Despite being slated for a court appearance on Friday via a video link from the Bend jail, Reece declined to participate, citing reservations about facing the charges. This led to a delay in the proceedings, as Circuit Judge Alycia Sykora, considering safety concerns for all involved, postponed Reece's appearance to Monday afternoon. This decision aimed to avoid the potential risks associated with forcibly extracting Reece from his jail cell.
As the legal process unfolds, local authorities and legal representatives continue to navigate the complexities surrounding this serious criminal case.
