Smith Rock State Park is not only known for its stunning rock formations and climbing routes but also for being part of a significant geological structure. What type of geological feature is Smith Rock a part of?
A) A fault line
B) A glacier valley
C) A caldera
D) A mountain range
Answer: C) A caldera
Expanded Answer: Smith Rock State Park is part of the Crooked River Caldera, a large volcanic caldera that formed around 30 million years ago. Mass Fish Die-Off at Fireman's Pond in Redmond, Oregon
Redmond, OR — A concerning environmental incident has struck Fireman's Pond in Redmond, Oregon, where hundreds of fish have been found dead. The cause of this sudden die-off is currently under investigation by local authorities and environmental agencies.
Fireman's Pond, a popular fishing spot for children and families, was recently the site of the Redmond Fish Fair, held in mid-May. This event saw many young anglers enjoying the pond, which is stocked with various fish species such as rainbow trout, bluegill, crappie, and bass.
The die-off was first noticed by local residents and visitors who observed a significant number of dead fish floating on the surface and along the banks of the pond. Reports have suggested that the cause might be related to a sudden drop in oxygen levels in the water, possibly due to rising temperatures and algal blooms, which are common issues in smaller bodies of water during the warmer months.
Redmond Fire & Rescue and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) have been alerted and are working to determine the exact cause. The ODFW has advised the public to avoid fishing or consuming fish from the pond until further notice.
Fireman's Pond is a crucial recreational spot in the community, particularly for young anglers. It is typically stocked annually by the ODFW, providing a safe and accessible location for children under 13 and disabled anglers to fish without the need for a license.
Authorities are urging residents to report any other unusual occurrences in local water bodies and are stepping up efforts to monitor the health of aquatic life in the area.
Chef Brian Malarkey’s Hawkeye & Huckleberry Lounge Set to Open
Bend, OR - Chef Brian Malarkey’s much-anticipated Hawkeye & Huckleberry Lounge will officially open its doors on Sunday, June 16. This unique dining venue features a ‘modern cowboy’ aesthetic, celebrating Oregon’s great outdoors with wood-fired ovens, live music, and a welcoming atmosphere.
The 11,000 square foot space offers a ranch-to-plate experience, complete with canvas tent semi-private dining areas, a seasonal outdoor patio with a ‘Kids Camp’ area, and a live fire for roasting s’mores. The lounge’s birchwood stage will host performances by local bands and touring artists, alongside projections of iconic acts such as Johnny Cash and the Lumineers.
“Opening Hawkeye & Huckleberry Lounge in Bend is a deeply personal endeavor for my brother James and me,” said Chef/Owner Brian Malarkey. “This restaurant is a heartfelt celebration of our Central Oregon heritage and the incredible community we’re proud to be a part of. From our ranch-raised beef and produce to locally sourced ingredients, each dish tells a story of home. We can’t wait to share this experience with our neighbors from Bend and beyond.”
Hawk & Huck is designed to be more than just a restaurant—it’s set to become a premier event destination in Bend. It offers various options for private parties, from intimate dining rooms to vibrant lounges and an impressive private event space with its own stage and outdoor patio.
Chef Malarkey, alongside Chef Tony Torres, emphasizes sustainability and quality by raising their own livestock and produce at P-B Hawkeye Ranch in Tumalo. The restaurant features an onsite butcher shop and smoker, ensuring high-quality steaks and unique dishes like Beef Tongue Tostadas and Cracked Skin Pork Belly. The menu also includes crowd favorites like Campfire Cornbread and Columbia River Salmon, complemented by an extensive drink menu featuring local beers and Pacific Northwest wines.
Designed by Bend-based Tricorn Black, the restaurant’s interior pays homage to Oregon’s ranching and foraging heritage. Guests can dine ‘under the stars’ or in cozy canvas tents, while the outdoor patio offers a gathering space around a crackling fire. The design incorporates elements inspired by charcoal, fire, and flowing rivers, creating an inviting and playful atmosphere.
Hawkeye & Huckleberry Lounge will be open Sunday through Thursday from 4-9 pm, and Friday and Saturday from 4-10 pm, with Happy Hour Monday through Friday from 4-5 pm and Industry Nights on Mondays. Reservations can be made through OpenTable.

Fire At Central Oregon Seeds Under Investigation
MADRAS, OR -- Jefferson County Fire & EMS continues to investigate a Monday evening fire at Central Oregon Seeds, near the Madras Airport. Firefighters were called to Mill Street just after 6:30 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the 36,000-square-foot building.
When crews got inside, they saw flames along the walls and roof of the large grain storage bins used for grass seed. Because the bins are made of wood and due to the amount of fire, Jefferson County called for additional crews, including from Bend, Cloverdale, Sisters and Black Butte Ranch. Firefighters from Redmond and Crook County also helped cover other emergency calls in Jefferson County, during the operation.
One firefighter was injured but is expected to recover.
Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District says its Fire Corps Incident Support Team was also activated, to support crews working the blaze. A three-person crew arrived "in the middle of the night and provided food and a dry place for firefighters to rehab," the district said in a social media post. Sisters' Fire Corps Team is the largest in the state.

"Building Brighter Futures: The Inspiring Work of Kids Inspired Non-Profit"
Our History
Our program began in the summer of 2008 when we sent 12 at-risk children to week-long camps. In 2020 camps were not offered due to the pandemic. So we began providing local enrichment activities to children served by our partner agencies.
In 2022 we served 350 kids–306 children with local enrichment activities and 44 with summer camp. Our goal for 2023 is to provide over 400 children with enrichment activities and to send 60 to summer camp.
There are many more kids. There are many more young lives to enrich. We firmly believe that kids inspired DO succeed.
Help us make the inspiration possible!
