Explore Newport Avenue with Bend's New Stormwater Walking Tour

The City of Bend is offering a new way to explore Newport Avenue with the Stormwater Walking Tour. An outdoor exhibit of interpretive signs will take guests on a self-paced walking tour of the historic corridor to give a glimpse into what is above and below ground.

The tour highlights stormwater system features, Bend’s water history, and educates the public about important city infrastructure that is helping protect the Deschutes River and its critters.

The self-guided tour begins and ends in Pageant Park at 691 NW Drake Road, along the Deschutes River. Student groups are already taking the tour as part of the city’s youth education partnership with the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council.

“We're thrilled to offer a tour allowing community members and visitors a special look at the Newport Avenue corridor and the Deschutes River. The tour includes information and exhibits that offer insights into the past and present, and illustrates the important role of new infrastructure in protecting the future of our beautiful river,” said Stormwater Program Manager Elisabeth Okeefe.

“We encourage community members to explore what is above and below ground and find out what you can do to help keep the Deschutes River clean.”

Rescue Teams and Helicopters Save Injured Climber on North Sister

Sisters, OR - Lane County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue was assisted by their Deschutes County counterparts, two air ambulances and a National Guard helicopter to rescue a fallen and injured climber on Saturday at a high elevation on the North Sister.

Deputies said the climber likely had several broken bones and was on an exposed scree slide, taking rockfall. He was able to call 911 and give updates on his location and condition on the 10,085-foot peak in the Three Sisters Wilderness.

A Lane County Sheriff’s SAR deputy deployed to high elevation on a Life Flight helicopter, while Deschutes County Sheriff’s SAR volunteers deployed on an AirLink helicopter. Another, backup team of SAR volunteers began climbing to the location as well.

Once the climber was located, the SAR personnel flown in by helicopters were able to climb to his location, provide medical care and move him from the precarious slope, deputies said.

An Oregon Army National Guard helicopter responded and airlifted the patient to a hospital for more medical care. AirLink retrieved the rescuers from the climber’s location, while the backup SAR team climbed back down and hiked out.

Madras Woman Pleads Guilty to Reduced Manslaughter Charge in Ex-Husband's Death, Faces 18-Year Sentence

Lady Justice.

A 27-year-old Madras woman entered a negotiated guilty plea Monday afternoon to a reduced charge of first-degree manslaughter in the December 2022 fatal shooting of her ex-husband and faces a likely sentence of nearly 18 years in prison.

Deschutes County Circuit Judge Alison Emerson, who has been overseeing the case, accepted the plea petition signed Monday by Paige Jordan Vannorsdall, which recommends dismissing the second-degree murder charge she faced. Prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed to recommend a 214-month sentence, followed by 26 months of post-prison supervision.

"On December 16, 2022, I intentionally caused the death of Devyne Briggs, another human being. At the time of the homicide I was acting under an extreme emotional disturbance, such that I lost the capacity to control myself and forgo the homicide," Vannorsdall, who initially pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges, stated in her plea petition.

Emerson scheduled sentencing in two weeks.

Grocery Outlet announces 14th annual Independence from Hunger Food Drive

Grocery Outlet on Monday launched its 14th annual Independence from Hunger Food Drive to combat food insecurity. Now through July 31, the campaign will collect cash donations and pre-made bags of nonperishable foods at Grocery Outlet’s 470+ locations that will be distributed to local food agency partners.

Data from the United States Department of Agriculture and Feeding America shows that inflation is causing a double squeeze in communities across the nation. As prices rise, the number of Americans who get groceries at a food bank has increased to 41 million or 1 in 6 households, but the amount of donations to food banks has gone down.

Each independently owned and operated Grocery Outlet store is committed to giving back to their community and has partnered locally to help their communities provide families with nutritious food.

“In a time when budgets are tight and families across the country are working hard to put food on the table, Grocery Outlet is in your corner. We’re thrilled with the continued success and growth of our annual Independence from Hungerâ Food Drive to support the communities we serve and take the worry out of where families will get their next meal,” said RJ Sheedy, President and CEO of Grocery Outlet. “None of this would be possible without the commitment of our employees, operators, charitable partners and customers. We are beyond grateful for their support to help end hunger.”
