Bend holds a special place in musician’s heart as Maiah Manser makes her way to the Hayden Homes stage
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A Bend native will realize a dream this week, performing at Hayden Homes Amphitheater. Maiah Manser will open for St. Vincent.
"When I was a kid, I would plead with my mom like, 'Please put me on Disney, please go!'" Manser said Monday. "And she's like, 'No - you will have a childhood.'"
Manser is a graduate of Bend Senior High School who now lives in LA, pursuing a career as a singer, songwriter and producer.
She considers nature her first audience, remembering singing to the trees as a child. Her songs now - with ‘A Smile’, ‘Pretty Enough’ and ‘Sirens’ - cover many genres, like electronic, pop and alternative.
Of course these days, social media is key. "I went viral last year for a small clip of me singing," she said.
I asked Manser if it was the song "A Smile." She said, "Yeah. It changed my life. It was really crazy! It was very life-altering."
Before graduating in 2009, Manser was involved in Bend High's choir, orchestra, and theater classes.
She went on to Cornish College of the Arts, in Seattle, where she studied jazz before making the jump to L.A. to pursue her music career.
Manser said, "I needed to move there. If I really wanted to make things happen, I wanted to expand my network. I've been really been glad that I did. But of course, Bend always had a special place in my heart."
Thursday evening at the amphitheater, she'll open for indy musician St. Vincent.
Manser began singing as young as 4 years old, and credits her mom with finding classes to help her grow her talent.
She admits she still gets nervous before performing, but remembers a piece of advice shared with her.
"I had someone say to me once - many years ago, but it's always stuck with me - they said, 'Why waste any moment, like when you're doing something that you absolutely love - why waste it being scared or nervous? You should just be absolutely loving it!"

'Dangerous situation': Pilot voices concern over Redmond Airport air traffic control staffing
Colby Enebrad, Reporter Central Oregon Daily
Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM) is a major hub for travel, especially during the summer. Tourists fly in for vacation and air tankers fly out responding to fires.
RDM is also experiencing an issue impacting thousands of other airports across the nation -- an air traffic control staffing shortage.
Peter McCook has been a pilot since 2006 and has flown out of RDM since 2015. He says the staffing shortage could spell disaster for the airport.
"My concern is that you have so many different types of aircraft here, different speed profiles and different pilot ability levels. Intersecting runways, transponders not required in this airspace, so I think this is a pretty dangerous situation," McCook said.
The airport has had to close its control tower completely for several days out of the past month, mostly on weekends. On other days, the tower is operated under reduced hours.
"There are now only three full-time air traffic controllers there, so that results in fewer operating hours on most days. What concerns me the most on Saturdays and or Sundays, from now and going forward, there will be no personnel in the control tower at all," McCook said.
As a tenant of RDM, McCook has received emailed notices from the airport, detailing the days the tower would be closed, and operating on reduced hours.
We will be 8-1800L (8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m) (1500-0100Z) through Friday June 28.
Jun 29, closed all day
Jun 30-Jul 05 will be 8-1800L.
Jul 6, closed all day.
Jul 7-12 will be 8-1800L.
Jul 13 closed all day.
Jul 14 will be 8-1800L.
Jul 15-16 Normal Hours.
Jul 17, 18, 19 will be 8-1800L.
Jul 20 and 21 closed all day.
Jul 22 will be 8-1800L.
Jul 23, 24 Normal Hours.
Jul 25, 26, 27 will be 8-1800L.
Jul 28 closed all day.
Jul 29 - Aug 2 will be 8-1800L
Aug 3, 4 closed all day
Aug 5 -10 0800-1800L
Aug 11 Closed
Aug 12-13 0800-1800L
Aug 14-15 0600-2200L
Aug 16-17 0800-1800L
Aug 18 Closed
Aug 19-23 0800-1800L
Aug 24-25 Closed
Aug 26-27 0600-2200L
Aug 28-31 0800-1800L
This is not unique to RDM. Most small, general aviation airports in the country operate without a tower at all.
Redmond is not a general aviation airport. It takes in thousands of commercial flights each year.
McCook says there are just too many variables at Redmond Municipal that some sort of traffic control is needed.
"We have an intersecting runway were at Redmond, like an 'X'. So we could have an airliner coming in on Runway 5 and a smaller plane on Runway 11, and there can be a collision," McCook said.
RDM does not oversee traffic control staffing. The FAA is responsible for recruiting, hiring and issuing traffic advisories for airports.
"What I'm asking for that the Redmond Airport be permitted by the FAA to set limits on what types of aircraft or what types of activity are allowed at those busy times on Saturdays and Sundays," McCook said.
In a written statement, the FAA said it is taking aggressive action to train and hire more air traffic controllers and is enhancing practices to get new hires through training more efficiently.

Welcome to August! Not sure about you, but all I can think about these days is a sneaky powder day in the middle of the week… One where your happenstance PTO day happens to fall right in line with a proper Bachelor storm. I suppose we will just have a wait a few months for that! I want to start by thanking all of our first responders and wildland firefighters that have been hard at work this summer trying to keep our communities, wildlife, and natural lands as safe as they can. Let’s jump into the highlights that I think our business community should be aware of!
Greenwood Avenue Quick Build Pilot Project
Construction on Greenwood Avenue is well underway (as I’m sure many of you have noticed)! I wanted to share a reminder that there will be a full 48-hour closure next week beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 5 and ending at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7. If you have a business in this area and have delivery schedule conflicts, please reach out to me ASAP and I will try my best to make accommodations for you. Below is a screenshot from this morning’s most recent update on the construction. You can keep up to date by referencing this link until the project is complete: Midtown Crossings Project | City of Bend (bendoregon.gov).
Cityfest 2024!
Join us for Cityfest 2024 on August 15, from 4-7 p.m. at 9th Street Village, home of the one and only Bevel Craft Brewing! This is a family-friendly opportunity to engage with various city departments, as well as learn more about businesses in the area including DIYcave, SOLSK8S, and Bonta Gelato. Mayor Melanie Kebler will be giving a short “State of the City” address around 5:45 p.m. Hope to share a beverage with you there!
Hawthorne Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing Concepts
We are getting into the final stages of concept designs for the future Hawthorne Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing, so I wanted to share the final four concepts and what potential development could look like, which will all be presented to the Bend City Council next week on August 7. The pictures below are just a snippet of what will be presented to Council, which do not include the various funding sources, the amount of community outreach and engagement that was done, and greater details about the challenges and opportunities each of the options poses. Please tune in next week to provide input and hear the guidance from our elected officials!
Option 1- Two Tower Cable Stay
Option 2- Single Tower Cable Stay
Option 3- Extradosed
Option 4- Steel Truss
