 Redmond Proclamation Designates Patriot Month

Posted by Heather Roberts KBND

REDMOND, OR -- Redmond expects to become the first city in the country to officially designate September as Patriot Month. The City Council plans to sign a proclamation at Tuesday night's meeting, written by Rachel Nordenhök. "I am very patriotic, myself. And, I've talked with some veterans that really supported this," she tells KBND News, "Because they feel like they need more than one day to celebrate, and for us to celebrate them."

Nordenhök says, "On Veterans Day, all the veterans and their different groups, they don't all get together in one place. So there's really not a time when they all celebrate together." According to the proclamation, Patriot Month is a time to show appreciation for those who serve our country and its interests. "And also to support our local law enforcement, our first responders, our military and the love for our country," says Nordenhök, "So we thought a whole month to do that would be great." Everyone is encouraged to display an American flag, wear patriotic gear and attend gatherings that support patriotism. "I am going to help one of the veterans put together an event where all of the veteran groups get together."

The original push was for July to be Patriot Month, but Nordenhök says the switch coincides with September eleventh, which is federally recognized as Patriot Day.

"Maybe that's dreaming big that Patriot Month would be taken up nationally?" says Nordenhök, "It could. But things take time, but it's been submitted. And I hope, personally, that it becomes a proclamation across the United States."

Also at Tuesday's meeting, the Redmond City Council will consider a proclamation designating this September 11th as a citywide period of honor for those impacted by the September eleventh attacks.

EDCO welcomes Brenna Fulks as new Jefferson County director

Brenna Fulks

Economic Development for Central Oregon (EDCO) is excited to announce the appointment of Brenna Fulks as the new Jefferson County director, effective Oct. 1.

In this role, Brenna will support EDCO’s mission of fostering a diversified local economy and a strong base of middle-class jobs. Her primary responsibilities will include guiding employers through the relocation process of moving to Jefferson County, managing and administering incentive programs and working closely with existing local traded-sector companies to help them grow and thrive.

Brenna Fulks is a seasoned community and economic development professional with a deep-rooted passion for revitalizing rural communities. Prior to joining EDCO, Brenna served as the Deputy Executive Director for a three-county economic development district in western Montana. Her unique experience and perspective and deep commitment to rural communities will be invaluable in her new role.

“There is a great deal of opportunity for business and industry growth across Jefferson County, and we are excited to have such an experienced economic development leader to develop and nurture opportunities locally,” said Will Ibershof, City Administrator for the City of Madras.

Brenna’s previous roles include serving as the Economic Development Lead for the City of Forest Grove, Oregon, and working as an independent consultant providing support to Humboldt County, California during the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic. She also served as Executive Director of the Klamath Falls Downtown Association (KFDA), where she focused on community development and marketing.

Haven Bagels + Coffee now open in Southeast Bend

Haven Bagels + Coffee is located in the new retail center at the corner of SW 27th Street and Reed Market Road in Bend.

Owners say the bagels are handmade from 100% organic ingredients with the goal of serving food with healthy ingredients.

"We just kind of blend coffee shop, bagel shop, restaurant vibes. Besides organic flour, organic sugar and local eggs and bacon, everything tends to be very farm to table," said Elijah Myers, the owner of Haven Bagels + Coffee.

Haven Bagels sources its ingredients from Well Rooted Farms in Redmond. They're also collaborating with Backporch Coffee Roasters, to keep the coffee local.

The shop is open 6:30 am to 2 pm.

Bend Chamber launches low-interest loan program to spur workforce housing development

The Bend Chamber is holding a media event Thursday to showcase the next phase of its Workforce Housing Initiative and celebrate a new, low-interest loan from the Chamber, funded by an initial seed donation of $500,000 from Providence Health Plan.

The loan product provides early-stage capital at a low interest rate to reduce the cost of constructing a home, making it affordable to locally employed, mid-market buyers.

“We are so grateful to community business leaders like Providence for investing in one of the fundamentals of community health – the ability to own a home,” said Katy Brooks, Bend Chamber CEO.

In partnership with Mid Oregon Credit Union, Bend Redmond Habitat for Humanity, and local builders Hiatus Homes, and Cascade Precision Homes, the first project utilizing this new loan product is located in SE Bend and will be ready for occupancy in early winter. The new home will be permanently affordable, and deed restricted to households earning up to 120% of area median income (AMI).

The low-interest, short-term loan is designed to offset land acquisition, pre-development, and construction costs in a market burdened by the high cost of land, construction supplies, labor and lending. The new program will leverage the collaboration of local builders, developers, investors and non-profit partners to build more attainable housing for Bend’s workforce within 80%-120% of AMI.

The Chamber conducted a study in 2022 that showed 91% of regional employers said housing had a high impact on their ability to hire and retain employees.

“This was a clear indication that our housing problem is not just a human issue, it’s an economic constraint,” said Sara Odendahl, Bend ChamberDirector of Government Affairs and Strategic Initiatives.

How the Loan Works

  • The Bend Chamber partners with non-profit housing organizations, builders, developers, and employers to identify land throughout the city of Bend to utilize the Loan, resulting in lower costs passed on to the buyer.

  • The fund is flexible and can be used for property acquisition, permitting, or construction costs.

  • The fund will be managed by Mid Oregon Credit Union and deployed as an 18-24-month revolving loan at 3% interest.

  • The home must be deed-restricted to ensure that future buyers are employed in Bend and earn between 80%-120% of AMI.

  • The loan fund is funded through philanthropic contributions to the BendNEXT Foundation, the 501(c)3 foundation of the Bend Chamber.

“Building homes within financial reach of employees is critical to employers”, said Brooks. “This loan provides a way to leverage the ability to reduce costs and partner with others who want Bend to be home and workplace to more of us.”

The mission of the Bend Chamber is to create an environment where businesses, their employees and our community excel together through collaboration, advocacy, resources and leadership to meet Bend’s business challenges.

The BendNEXT Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Bend Chamber. BendNEXT strengthens our businesses, economy, and our community through workforce development and retention, leadership development, and activating partnerships to tackle our region’s most pressing issues.

Serious Motorcycle Crash Closes Southbound Lanes of Bend Parkway

On the evening of Tuesday, August 27, 2024, a serious motorcycle crash led to the closure of the southbound lanes on the Bend Parkway near Reed Lane. The incident occurred at approximately 7:26 p.m. when a 21-year-old Bend resident lost control of their motorcycle, causing it to roll multiple times. The motorcyclist was thrown from the vehicle and landed down an embankment on the west side of the Parkway.

Witnesses at the scene immediately reported the crash, prompting a swift response from Bend Police. Officers arriving at the site provided initial medical care until Bend Fire & Rescue arrived. The injured motorcyclist was transported to St. Charles Bend and is expected to survive.

As a result of the crash, both southbound lanes of the Parkway were closed for about 30 minutes, with one lane remaining closed until approximately 8:56 p.m. The Oregon State Police are conducting a further investigation into the incident.

Motor Vehicle Crash in Terrebonne Pond Follows Traffic Complaint

On August 26, 2024, a series of traffic complaints on Highway 97 led to a dramatic motor vehicle crash in Terrebonne, resulting in a silver Honda Pilot overturning into a pond near Smith Rock State Park. The driver, identified as 34-year-old Jacob Lecense of Bend, Oregon, was arrested on multiple charges, including Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants.

The incident began at approximately 3:45 p.m. when the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a silver SUV erratically traveling northbound on Highway 97 near mile post 134. Witnesses described the vehicle as swerving between lanes and nearly colliding with other cars.

A Community Action Target Team (CATT) deputy located the vehicle near mile post 124 and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. However, the driver continued northward, eventually losing sight of law enforcement.

Shortly afterward, at 4:07 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash in the 2000 block of Wilcox Ave. A silver Honda Pilot had flipped over and ended up in a pond. The driver was initially trapped inside the vehicle, though it was not fully submerged.

Deputies arrived at the scene and helped the uninjured Lecense out of the vehicle. He was transported to St. Charles Redmond for evaluation and later released. Lecense was then taken into custody and lodged at the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Adult Jail on charges of Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Reckless Driving, and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree.

Jefferson County Man Arrested for Burglarizing Two Redmond Businesses

REDMOND, OR - On August 22, Redmond Police arrested 34-year-old Ryan Gray, a resident of Jefferson County, in connection with burglaries at two local businesses: Sora Sushi and Xtreme RC and Hobbies. The crimes, which took place on August 19, occurred in close proximity to each other.

The investigation, which involved video footage and physical evidence, led detectives to obtain a search warrant for one of Gray’s residences in Jefferson County. During the search, police recovered stolen property, including radio-controlled cars and parts, linking Gray to the crimes.

Gray was taken into custody and lodged at the Deschutes County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including two counts of Burglary II, two counts of Criminal Mischief II, one count of Criminal Mischief I, and one count of Aggravated Theft I.

The Redmond Police Department collaborated with several other agencies in this investigation, including the Bend Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Madras Police Department, and Crooked River Fire and Rescue, leading to a successful resolution.

100+ Women Who Care Central Oregon celebrates 10 years of giving, has raised nearly $760,000 for nonprofits

Filling the fundamental human desire for connection and community is what we all strive for. When friends join a giving circle, it strengthens social bonds and fosters a sense of camaraderie. This is what inspired 100+ Women Who Care Central Oregon in 2014.

Today, the all-volunteer organization with more than 130+ members continues to thrive and is celebrating 10 years of giving, the organization said in a news release Tuesday, which continues below.

Collectively the group has raised nearly $760,000 for close to 50 Central Oregon nonprofits since its first meeting on September 15, 2014.

“Our impact is truly profound. A selected nonprofit can receive $13,000 to $20,000, which is significant for small nonprofits who may not have the resources to raise funds,” said Christi Haynes of Brooks Resources Corporation and current leader of the organization. “Beyond providing substantial financial support, the emotional support is invaluable, fostering a sense of community.”

At the quarterly meetings, three nonprofit organizations are randomly drawn from nominations generated by members. Each representative has five minutes to tell the story to the group of why her nonprofit should receive the collective funds.

The presenter also has five minutes to answer questions. After all three organizations had a chance to give their presentation, those in attendance decide on the recipient. The organization with the most votes is announced. Each member then writes a $100 check that night or donates on the nonprofit’s website.

Funds raised go even further through the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation who matches a $10,000 collection with a grant of $5,000.

“For our members, knowing that their contributions are making a real difference is empowering. It reinforces the idea that collective action can lead to significant positive change,” said Alice Sole, steering committee member since 100+WWCCO’s inception.

The first 100WWC chapter was started in November of 2006 by Realtor® Karen Dunigan, from Jackson, Michigan. 100+WWCCO was the first chapter in Oregon and is part of the nationwide 100 Women Alliance.

In 2023 4,000 giving circles, in the US had collectively donated $3.1 billion (yes, that’s with a ‘b’!) since 2017. Nationally, there are more than 370,000 giving circle members.

“Over the past ten years I have learned about so many of Central Oregon's unique nonprofits and forces for good,” said Gwenn Wysling, long time member and executive director for Bethlehem Inn, the first recipient of 100+ funds. “100+WWCCO bring together an ever-growing collection of compassionate and engaged women who are individually powerful and together have made a huge difference in our communities.”

When other nonprofit organizations had to reduce their services due to the pandemic, 100+WWCCO united even more. The members ‘voted’ with their wallet, donating to the organization of their choice, with many members contributing funds to all three organizations.

“Our contributions have touched countless lives and helped build a stronger, more resilient Central Oregon,” mentioned Lisa Shropshire, co-founder of the group. “As we approach our 10th anniversary, I look forward to continuing this legacy of generosity and impact, inspiring more women to join us in this rewarding endeavor.”

100+WWCCO encourages all women interested to attend the next meeting on Monday, September 9 at the Deschutes Children’s Foundation on the Rosie Bareis Campus. Nominations by members for area nonprofits are accepted through Sept. 5.

Meet Eeyore & Piglet! 💖

Eeyore

Piglet

Eeyore and Piglet may be SMOL, but what they lack in size, they make up for with BIG personalities

These 2 month old Chi weenie mixes came to us from Oklahoma a couple of weeks ago along with their mom and siblings. They are now spayed, up-to-date on their shots and are looking for a lap or cup holder to fall asleep in

Both Eeyore and Piglet have gotten along with everyone they’ve been introduced to. Their foster family takes them everywhere they go and they are quickly becoming quite the little socialites. In fact, if you are reading this and live in Bend, there’s a 90% chance you have held them in the grocery store line.

Another added bonus about Eeyore and Piglet is that these girls can hang with the big dogs. They are currently living in a foster home with 5 Large dogs so it’s safe to say, these girls are tough and can handle their own

Want to make your teeny tiny puppy dreams come true? Apply to adopt Piglet or Eeyore today by filling out an Adoption Application at streetdoghero.org.
