Illegal pass, head-on crash on Mt. Washington Drive bring reckless driving charge; small co.’s truck also totaled
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A driver’s illegal pass led to a head-on crash on NW Mt. Washington Drive Monday afternoon that closed the road for two hours and led to reckless driving charges, police said. It also dealt a severe blow to the small business Green Ridge Excavation whose pickup truck he hit.
Bend Police responded around 3 p.m. Monday to the crash on Mt. Washington Drive near Wild Rye Circle, Communications Manager Sheila Miller said Tuesday.
The male driver of a Toyota Avalon illegally passed another vehicle in a no-passing zone (over the double-yellow lines) and collided head-on with a pickup truck, Miller said.
There were no major injuries, she said, and the Avalon’s driver was cited for reckless driving and failure to carry valid proof of insurance.
Costco’s new, larger Bend store just days away from opening
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) Just days away, the final touches are being completed on Central Oregon's new Costco, and members are excited to check it all out. The new store off Cooley Road is much larger than the former location at the Forum Shopping Center.
The new Costco opens Saturday at 8 a.m., just 15 hours after the old northeast Bend store closes, at 5 p.m. Friday.
One member told us they plan on getting up at 2 a.m. Saturday, just to get in line.
Employees pf the warehouse retail store tell us they're ready to welcome the community to their new location.
Michael Biven, a membership marketer for Costco, told us that Central Oregon's rapid growth brought rising demand at the store - which made parking "a nightmare."
"It is hopefully just adapting with the community, because of how fast it's rapidly growing," Biven said.
More than 400 employees will be working at the new store, and Costco says it's still hiring to fill some of those positions.
Along with the warehouse, the new location has a large gas station with 32 pumps, about 300 more parking spots and a two-story pharmacy.
Biven said Costco workers are at the new location this week, offering new member sign-ups with a special promotion until opening day.
The previous location will be put up for sale, he said, with hopes it'll be purchased by another retailer in the future.
National Wild Turkey Federation, Ochoco National Forest partner on western juniper removal project
Oregon wildfires have scorched a record-breaking 1.9 million acres this year — the most acres ever damaged in modern state history, according to the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center.
These ongoing wildfires have posed significant challenges for land and wildlife managers this season, severely impacting landscapes, wildlife and surrounding communities.
Despite these difficulties, the National Wild Turkey Federation says it remains steadfast in its commitment to conservation in the Beaver State, the organization and on Tuesday issued a news release about one of its latest projects:
On Monday, October 7, the NWTF and the USDA Forest Service launched the Sunflower Project in Central Oregon’s Ochoco National Forest to address the growing threat of conifer encroachment.
The Sunflower Project focuses on removing western juniper, an invasive species that threatens critical wildlife habitats, such as sagebrush, hardwood and bitterbrush ecotypes. The objective is to enhance winter foraging ranges by restoring sagebrush and bitterbrush habitats, essential for species like wild turkeys, elk, deer, sage grouse and pronghorn.
“The encroachment of western juniper is contributing to the loss of desirable winter forage,” said Krista Modlin, NWTF district biologist for California, Oregon, Washington and Nevada. “The invasion of juniper causes competition for native shrubs, forbs and grasses for moisture, sunlight and nutrients.”
The project will cover 268 acres and is expected to be completed in the coming weeks. While the work was slated to begin last month, implementation was delayed due to the Rail Ridge Fire.
The Sunflower Project was selected, in part, due to the NWTF's previous success in releasing wild turkeys in the area in 2000 and 2006.
The Oregon NWTF State Chapter contributed $14,000 for the project, with additional funding support from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
About the National Wild Turkey Federation
Since 1973, the National Wild Turkey Federation has invested over half a billion dollars into wildlife conservation and has positively impacted over 23 million acres of critical wildlife habitat. The NWTF has also invested over $9 million into wild turkey research to guide the management of the wild turkey population and to ensure sustainable populations into perpetuity. The organization continues to deliver its mission by working across boundaries on a landscape scale through its Four Shared Values: clean and abundant water, healthy forests and wildlife habitat, resilient communities, and robust recreational opportunities. With the help of its dedicated members, partners and staff, the NWTF continues its work to provide Healthy Habitats. and Healthy Harvests. for future generations.
Redmond Reduces Water Use Despite Population Growth and Drier Climate
Redmond is tackling its water usage amid population growth and a drier climate. Since 2021, water use has dropped by 4%, even as 3,000 new residents moved in. City programs focused on reducing outdoor residential water use, along with denser housing, have contributed to this. In July 2024, Redmond used 4 million fewer gallons compared to the previous year, despite a hotter summer.
To conserve more water, the city introduced an irrigation rebate program and increased water rates, especially for heavy users. The Redmond Garden Club and schools are also adopting water-efficient practices, and the city is converting some landscaped areas to water-wise zones. Redmond relies on groundwater from eight wells, but concerns about long-term water availability remain due to declining groundwater levels.

Sheriff’s Office Seeks Help Identifying Suspect in Bend Home Burglary Caught on Camera
Bend, Oregon — The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public's help in identifying a suspect involved in a daylight burglary. The incident occurred on October 14, 2024, in the 17000 block Indio RD in Three Rivers, where a homeowner observed the burglary in real-time through remote security cameras.
The homeowner contacted Deschutes County 911 after spotting a male suspect inside his home. The suspect was able to disable the interior cameras during the burglary, but not before the homeowner captured both a still image and video footage of the individual.
The suspect is described as a white male wearing glasses, a camouflage hooded sweatshirt, a black face covering, a black baseball cap, black pants, and red and black gloves.
Authorities are actively investigating the case and are encouraging anyone with information to contact the Deschutes County 911 non-emergency line at 541-693-6911.
In light of the incident, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is urging the community to stay vigilant. Residents are advised to report any suspicious vehicles, individuals, or activity in their neighborhoods. The Sheriff's Office also recommends enhancing home security with proper lighting, securing windows and doors, and using exterior cameras mounted out of easy reach to prevent tampering.
Meet Ollie
Ollie, a two-year-old terrier mix, is a spunky, 15-pound bundle of energy waiting for his forever home. Rescued from a shelter in Norman, Oklahoma, Ollie made his way to Bend, Oregon, thanks to the non-profit transport partner Dog is My Copilot. Now, he’s enjoying life in a foster home and is ready to find his perfect match.
Before adoption, Ollie will receive a full wellness exam from our veterinarian to ensure he’s spayed/neutered, up to date on his vaccinations, and microchipped. You can start your adoption journey with a 3-day home trial to see if this playful pup is the right fit for your family.
According to his foster, Ollie is a high-energy dog who would thrive with an active owner. He loves playing with other dogs, is potty trained, and settles down in his kennel at night after a few minutes. With a proper introduction, he might even get along with cats! If you're looking for a loyal, fun-loving companion, Ollie might just be the one.
Adoption fee: $450. Don’t miss your chance to adopt this little hero—submit your application online today!
