DCSO Recovers Stolen Mail, Including Unopened Ballots
The Deschutes County Sheriffโs Office would like to remind our community to be vigilant in monitoring their mail as it is delivered to them. Mail theft unfortunately occurs throughout the year, but historically begins to rise at this time during the year through the holidays. Earlier on this date, it was reported to DCSO that a large amount of mail was located on the side of the road near Hunnel Rd and Loco Rd. There were several unopened ballots located within this found mail. All ballots were returned to the Deschutes County Clerkโs Office to be re-issued to the affected voters. If you have not received your ballot by Wednesday, 10/23/24, you should contact the Deschutes County Clerk Steve Dennison at 541-388-6547.
The Deschutes County Sheriffโs Office recommends members of our community check their mail frequently and avoid leaving it in their mailboxes overnight.
St. Charles not affected after major IV fluid maker forced to close plant because of Helene
St. Charles Medical Center in Bend says it will not be affected after a leading supplier of IV fluid in the U.S. was forced to shut down a factory due to Hurricane Helene.
The Baxter International facility near Asheville, N.C. was shut down as the remnants of Helene left it covered in mud. Roads and bridges leading to the facility were heavily damaged.
The company says it is starting to resume partial shipments as hospitals around the country are forced to conserve their supplies.
St. Charles said it buys IV fluid from a supplier that is not impacted and that they avoided any shortages in Central Oregon.
Grand opening set this week for Redmond 60-unit affordable housing apartment community
REDMOND, OR - Housing Works is happy to invite the community to the grand opening event celebrating the leasing of units at Spencer Court, a 60-unit affordable housing apartment community designed to support working families and individuals living in Redmond.
The event will start at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Speakers will include government officials and partners involved in bringing this development to fruition, Housing Works said in a news release:
This thriving area is close to shopping, banking, medical, recreation, and public transportation.
Where previously stood 16 obsolete units built in the early 1980s stands 60 modern units that come fully equipped with amenities such as dishwashers, washers and dryers, and mini-splits for heating and cooling comfort. Each unit has a private patio or deck area for outside enjoyment and large windows that fill the units with natural light.
The mixture of unit types will support and encourage various household compositions and multi-generational interactions.
Juniper Ridge latest
BEND, OR -- A joint agreement between the city and county to create a temporary managed camp at Juniper Ridge is on hold.
Earlier this week, Deschutes County Commissioners couldnโt agree on a path forward, failing to approve a legal framework. Bend City Manager Eric King now says the cityโs efforts have shifted to a plan B, out of concern federal funding will expire before the county signs on to a deal.
The city and county originally agreed to create a temporary site on 170 acres north of Bend, to provide case management and sanitation services.
Click HERE to read the letter sent by the city to Commissioners after that meeting. The city also issued a pulic statement, saying in part:
On September 5, the Bend City Council and the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners at a joint meeting unanimously agreed to work collaboratively to:
Establish a Temporary Safe Stay Area to help protect community members, both housed and unhoused
Increase security
Lessen the impacts on the environment from trash and wildfire
Work collaboratively with service providers and the Coordinated Houselessness Response Office to allocate and leverage county-wide resources to assist in case management
The Deschutes County Board of Commissionersโ failure to adopt a resolution implementing our agreement from September is an extremely disappointing development. Our joint City and County constituents are demanding action. The City of Bend is ready to move forward with creating solutions for the Juniper Ridge area to increase safety for nearby residents and property, reduce wildfire risk, give people a safe place to stay, and to provide case management services to help individuals move into more permanent housing. We appreciate the support of Commissioner Tony DeBone who showed a willingness to move forward with the resolution today instead of further delaying implementation of the agreement made at the joint meeting to collaborate and work together on finding solutions to managing the Juniper Ridge area.
Two missing Navy aviators declared dead days after aircraft crash in Washington state
Two U.S. Navy aviators have been declared dead following the crash of their EA-18G Growler jet during a training flight near Mount Rainier on October 15, 2024. After several days of search and rescue operations, the Navy transitioned to recovery efforts.
The site of the crash was finally found Thursday, two days after the incident; search-and-rescue teams did not reach the site until Friday. The Navy said last week that the site was at roughly 6,000 feet and in โa remote, steep and heavily wooded area.โ
The Navy said Sunday that personnel were still on-site continuing โto search the expansive area, recovering debris and planning for the long-term salvage and recovery effort.โ
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and the names of the aviators have not yet been released per Navy protocols.
Alaska Air Flight 300 returns to PDX safely following bird strike, passengers rebooked
PORTLAND, OR โ An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-MAX 9 aircraft had to make an emergency landing Sunday morning at Portland International Airport.
The flight, Alaska Airlines Flight 300, was scheduled to go to Orlando from Portland when just after takeoff, the crew reported a bird strike.
โOur pilots are trained for these situations and landed the aircraft safely without any issue,โ Alaska Airlines told KATU News. โThe aircraft returned to the gate and guests were rebooked to Orlando. The aircraft has been removed from service for inspection.โ
According to the flight tracking website FlightRadar24.com, the plane was in the air for about 20 minutes before it landed back at PDX at about 8:10 a.m.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration wildlife strike database, there have been 33 reported bird strikes at PDX in 2024 so far.

One Dead, Two Injured in Two-Vehicle Crash on Highway 140 in Jackson County
Jackson County, Ore. โ A tragic two-vehicle crash on Highway 140 in Jackson County claimed the life of one driver and left two others injured on Thursday afternoon, October 17, 2024. The incident occurred near milepost 31 at approximately 2:58 p.m.
According to Oregon State Police, a Chevrolet Colorado driven by Fabiola Salcedo, 42, of Dorris, California, was traveling eastbound when she lost control of her vehicle. The truck spun into the westbound lane, where it was struck on the passenger side by a Subaru Forester, driven by 74-year-old Danny Ray Ebert of La Pine.
Salcedo was pronounced dead at the scene.
Danny Ray Ebert and his passenger, Phyllis Ann Ebert, 77, also of La Pine, sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. Both were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The crash closed the highway for approximately 2.5 hours as authorities conducted an on-scene investigation. Oregon State Police believe the crash may have been caused by roadway conditions and speed.
We can hardly wait! The ice returns Monday, Oct. 21. Come share in all the chilly, icy goodness.
