City of Bend Hosts Open House for 'Planning for People Streets' Project โ€“ Shaping the Future of Community-Centered Streets

Community members are invited to attend a City of Bend open house on a project called Planning for People Streets. Bend has great people-centered streets, like Brooks Street Alley, and is expecting more in the future. This study will help the city plan for where and how Bend could have more of these kinds of vibrant People Streets in Bend.

The open house will take place on Friday, Nov. 15 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Commons Cafe & Taproom, 875 NW Brooks Street in Bend.

This will be an opportunity for community members to learn about best practices for People Streets and โ€œlow-car districtsโ€ to understand possible street types, design considerations and supportive policies and programs to allow for more vibrant, people-centered streets in the future.

Community input will help the city define terms like โ€œpeople streetโ€ and โ€œlow-car districtโ€ to meet new state land use and transportation rules, which will guide the future development of our town.

The city has identified the Juniper Park to Drake Park route as a case study to test the โ€œpeople streetโ€ ideas on an actual route. Input at the open house will help inform the Juniper Park to Drake Park case study in order to explore ways to connect key destinations with People Streets as an addition to the planned Hawthorne Pedestrian & Bicycle Overcrossing.

Mailbox Vandalism Worries Bend Residents

Multiple mailboxes across Bend, Ore., have been vandalized, leaving residents like Lorraine Yahnke and Sasha Peretti frustrated and concerned. In northeast and southwest Bend, damaged cluster mailboxes have been pried open, while Newport Hills resident Steve Crozier reported finding his mailbox empty despite a delivery notification.

Bend Police have received 11 reports of potential mail theft, including three this week. The U.S. Postal Service acknowledges delays due to staffing shortages and is working to repair vandalized boxes. USPS advises residents to collect mail promptly and use Informed Delivery for added security. The police are investigating whether these incidents may be linked.

City installing stop signs at Pine/Hood intersection

City work crews are installing stop signs at the intersection of Hood Avenue and Pine Street next week.

Public Works Director Paul Bertagna told The Nugget that, โ€œThe Public Works Advisory Board (PWAB) directed staff to take a look at the Hood/Pine intersection to see if it warranted a stop control change to an all-way stop. We then had our Traffic Engineer (Joe Bessman) analyze the intersection to see if it met the all-way stop criteria. Joe has looked at this intersection in the past and at that time it did not meet the warrants of an all-way stop.

โ€œHis latest intersection review in September recommends installing an all-way stop using the constrained sight distance and elevated pedestrian crossings as justification. He also recommends eliminating the left turn lane on Hood to better align the Hood Avene travel lanes.

โ€œPWAB in their September meeting unanimously passed a motion to move forward with making the intersection an all-way stop.โ€

Installation of sign bases and crosswalk striping and turn arrow removal are underway.

Turn lane hash striping and โ€œStopโ€ stencils are to be installed on Thursday, November 7, weather permitting, with the all-way stop completed on November 7.

Workshop boosts nonprofits

Sisters, OR - Local nonprofits Age-Friendly Sisters Country (AFSC) and Citizens4Community (C4C) are teaming up to offer a free workshop for residents interested in turning their community building ideas into reality.

โ€œWhat Do You Do With An Idea?โ€ will take place Sunday, November 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Sisters Fire District Community Hall. The event will also be live-streamed and recorded, and light refreshments will be provided. Registration for both in-person and online attendance is requested, and is accessible at bit.ly/wdydwai.

โ€œThis event is designed to help community members understand the wide variety of ways that they can make a difference in Sisters Country,โ€ said Mike Deal, AFSCโ€™s Board President. โ€œWeโ€™ve heard from many people who have great ideas, but arenโ€™t sure how to implement them. Our workshop will walk them through the ins and outs of various pathways like volunteering, fiscal sponsorship, starting a nonprofit, and more.โ€

The workshop will be facilitated by C4C Executive Director Kellen Klein, and will feature a bevy of local organizational leaders with rich experience in the nonprofit and social impact sectors. Confirmed speakers include Roundhouse Foundation Executive Director Erin Borla, City of Sisters Mayor Michael Preedin, and representatives from AFSC, Sisters Transportation and Ride Share (STARS), Sisters Community Leadership Initiative (SCLI), Rotary Club of Sisters, Living Well With Dementia Sisters, Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council (COIC), and The Grant Lab.

โ€œThis is really a โ€˜Nonprofits 101โ€™ kind of event,โ€ said Klein. โ€œThere are so many opportunities for residents of Sisters Country to put their time, treasure, and talents toward worthy local causes. But knowing where to dive in can be overwhelming. We aim to demystify the process โ€“ showing folks different levels of engagement based on their interest and capacity.โ€

The workshop will help answer questions like:

โ€ขโ€ฏWhere do volunteer opportunities exist in Sisters Country?

โ€ขโ€ฏWhat does serving on a nonprofit board look like?

โ€ขโ€ฏWhat does it take to start a nonprofit?

โ€ขโ€ฏWhat is fiscal sponsorship, and how can it be an efficient way to launch a new community program?

โ€ขโ€ฏWhere does one find funding for a new community program or initiative?

โ€œWhat Do You Do With An Ideaโ€ is supported by St. Charles Health System, AARP, and the City of Sisters. The event is free, but registration is requested and seating is limited โ€“ sign up now at bit.ly/wdydwai. Transportation assistance, interpretation services, and childcare stipends are also available upon request; email [email protected] to inquire.

Deschutes County Road Department plans to close Cascade Lakes Highway, Paulina Lake Road for the winter on Nov. 19

The Deschutes County Road Department announced this week that it plans to close the Cascade Lakes Highway and Paulina Lake Road for the winter season on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at about 8 a.m.

The high-elevation forest highways are closed annually in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service to provide for winter recreation opportunities.

Deschutes County provides maintenance on these highways through an easement agreement with the Forest Service.

"It is not uncommon for roadside snow accumulation to exceed five to 10 feet at the road summit," the county announcement said. "Continual snow/ice maintenance of these road segments is cost-prohibitive."

The Road Department said it will aim to remove snow and open both Cascade Lakes Highway and Paulina Lake Road prior to Memorial Day each year.

Redmond sanitation company worker injured when train collides with truck at crossing

A Redmond sanitation company worker was injured and taken to the hospital Friday afternoon after his truck was struck by a freight train at a crossing south of Redmond, officials and others said.

The collision involving a BNSF Railway train and a pickup with flatbed trailer from Superior Sanitation occurred around 12:45 p.m. at a crossing on a gravel road that leads east from Highway 97 to the Redmond Rod and Gun Club.

A bystander told NewsChannel 21 the truck was heading east when it was hit by the southbound train, which spun it around, causing the truck to topple and spill two portable toilets and a pump.

Oregon State Police confirmed the crash but had few initial details to share.

A company representative said the driver had come from Bend and was headed to a private property owner along the road to service their rental toilet.

BLM Fence Vandalized near Redmond

REDMOND, OR -- Prineville BLM officials are searching for the person or people responsible for vandalizing a fence west of Redmond. In September, someone systematically cut all four strands of the fence for almost a mile.

The fence served as a boundary marker between public and private land along Kingwood Avenue. It helped distinguish the edge of the Buckhorn Off Highway Vehicle Trail System and limit access to public lands for illegal dumping.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call the Prineville BLM office at 541-416-6700. The office will restring the wire when time and funds allow.

PBMS Gun at School Update

The 12-year-old student accused of bringing a loaded gun to Pilot Butte Middle School last week was released from custody, following a Thursday hearing. Deschutes County District Attorney Steve Gunnels says his office strongly objected to the release, as did the PBMS parents and students who came to court. But ultimately, the judge disagreed. Criminal charges have been filed, but details are not available, due to the suspectโ€™ย€ย™s age.
