Caldera HS choir group takes top honors at Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival

BEND, Ore. -- A Caldera High School vocal jazz group won big at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival last week. The group, calling itself "Inversion," beat out 20 other west coast schools in their division -- those with more than 1,200 students -- to bring home the first place trophy.

"I do think this is one of the biggest accomplishments I've had in my singing career,' senior Sage Goldstein said. "It was awesome to be able to perform in front of so many people who knew about jazz music and about the type of music we were doing."

The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival is a three-day event at the University of Idaho. More than 400 student performances are given. "Inversion" received top honors and opened for Grammy-winning acapella group Take 6.

"It was crazy to look out and see an actual crowd that, while they weren't there for us, so many people got to listen to one of our songs," junior Ethan Dinsmore said.

The event started in the 1960s and is now one of the oldest and largest jazz festivals in the world. Up to a dozen of world-renowned jazz artists attend it every year.

Now the trophy stands tall in the display case just inside the east entrance of Caldera High School.

"Coming back, it was really fulfilling. We really put so much work and time and effort into these songs. It's really great to be recognized and seen, not just in Central Oregon, but all over the Pacific Northwest," senior Max Fulkerson said.

Caldera High School, just four years old, has added yet another major accolade to its very short history.

"We're not a legacy program that's been here forever, so to be able to reach that level of musicianship at a festival that's this prestigious, really early on in a high school history, is just incredible," choir director at Caldera High School Luke MacSween said.

Bend's Earth Day Fair happening Saturday, but parade is canceled

BEND, Ore. -- The annual Earth Day Parade in downtown Bend has been canceled for this year, but this Saturday's Earth Day Fair is still on.

The Environmental Center, which puts on the event, said Monday it has become more difficult to recruit enough volunteers. It also says the permitting process to shut down city streets has become increasingly cumbersome.

The cancellation of the parade means the Environmental Center can put all of its focus into the Earth Day Fair.

“Trust me, I know that a lot of folks are upset about the parade and I totally get that but this gives us the opportunity to just really focus on the festival and the fair itself. You will not be disappointed, I promise," said Environmental Center Events and Outreach Manager Priscilla Calleros

Saturday’s fair will feature a stage and runway to show off costumes and plenty of family-friendly activities. It will be 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at 16 NW Kansas Avenue.

Contractor hits water line in NE Bend; 1,500 customers told to boil water

BEND, Ore. -- A water line was broken by a contractor in northeast Bend Tuesday afternoon, leading Avion Water to issue a precautionary boil water notice to hundreds of homes in the area, the utility announced. It also led to some significant flooding in the area.

The break happened on Deschutes Market Road near Pine Nursery Park. That's the same general area where a roundabout is under construction, although there was no confirmation Tuesday evening that the break was a result of the construction work there.

Avion President Jason Wick said a 12-inch line was broken at about 3:20 p.m. Repairs were expected to be completed before 8:00 p.m. Tuesday.

About 1,500 customers were affected by the boil notice. Wick said test results on the water should be back by 5:00 p.m. Wednesday. If those tests are negative, the boil notice will be lifted and customers will be contacted. Those with further questions can call 541-382-5342.

Here is the full list of addresses affected by the boil advisory.

Oregon Senate Votes to Repeal Controversial Wildfire Risk Map

Salem, OR - The Oregon Senate has unanimously passed Senate Bill 83, repealing the state's controversial wildfire hazard map introduced in 2021. The map aimed to identify areas at high risk for wildfires, imposing stricter building codes and vegetation management requirements on approximately 100,000 properties. However, it faced significant opposition from rural residents who argued that it negatively impacted property values and imposed burdensome regulations.

Senate Bill 83 not only eliminates the wildfire hazard map but also repeals associated property maintenance rules for designated high-risk areas. The legislation directs state agencies to develop fire regulations that property owners can choose to follow or that municipal governments can adopt and enforce locally. Additionally, the bill adds two members to the state Wildfire Programs Advisory Council—one from the firefighting field and one from the insurance industry—and mandates reports from the Department of Environmental Quality and the Public Utility Commission on wildfire-related issues.

The bill now moves to the Oregon House of Representatives for consideration.

Bend Man Arrested Near Elementary School After Violating Restraining Order and Fleeing Police

BEND, Ore. — A 21-year-old Bend man was taken into custody Monday morning after allegedly violating a restraining order and fleeing from police in a Southeast Bend neighborhood, prompting a large law enforcement presence near Silver Rail Elementary School.

The incident began around 11:45 a.m. on April 21, when a 911 caller on Whitetail Street screamed into the phone before abruptly hanging up. Additional emergency calls soon reported that a man—later identified as Owen Parker Liening—was armed and at the location, in violation of a restraining order.

When officers arrived, Liening was spotted outside the residence but took off running through the neighborhood. He eventually circled back toward the elementary school, where officers apprehended him in the school parking lot. He was restrained using a wrap device and taken into custody without further incident.

Silver Rail Elementary was notified of the situation due to its proximity to the police activity, though there were no reported injuries or disruptions to the school day.

Liening was transported to St. Charles Bend for evaluation and will be booked into the Deschutes County Jail on charges including two counts of harassment, violating a restraining order, and resisting arrest.
